On April 24, Hospital 19-8 ( Ministry of Public Security ) organized a scientific workshop "Infertility and male diseases in the People's Public Security Forces: Current situation and treatment directions".
Attending the workshop were representatives of the Department of Health , the Board of Directors of the Traditional Medicine Hospital of the Ministry of Public Security, Hospital 30-4, Hospitals, Police Clinics of local units in the Northern region; and the reporters were leading experts in the fields of infertility, sterility, and congenital hemolytic disease.
Speaking at the workshop, Colonel, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen, Director of Hospital 19-8, said that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), infertility is a global health problem affecting about 17.5% of people of childbearing age globally and 16.5% in low- and middle-income countries.
Colonel, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen spoke at the conference.
In Vietnam, infertility is a complex and increasing problem, caused by environmental factors (air pollution, water pollution, etc.), modern life pressure, economic pressure, work pressure, late age of marriage and childbirth, long birth intervals, unhealthy lifestyle and sexual behavior.
“In the People's Public Security Forces, due to the nature of the work, many specific activities, working in difficult areas, working in harsh environments, being exposed to toxic chemicals, radioactive substances as well as radioactive rays such as radar officers in factories, weapons storage facilities, hospitals. Working long days in harsh environments and weather has caused adverse effects on general health and reproductive health in particular,” Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen emphasized.

“The hospital invited leading experts in infertility to share knowledge and future orientations for establishing a Center for Reproductive Support and Gender Medicine, meeting the medical examination and treatment needs of officers and soldiers. Helping couples have healthy children will bring spiritual value and motivation to help soldiers achieve many achievements, helping medical facilities at all levels pay due attention to infertility treatment,” emphasized the Director of Hospital 19-8.
Sharing his experience at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang, Director of the Andrology Center of Viet Duc Hospital, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Gender Medicine, said that the infertility rate in Vietnam currently accounts for about 10% of couples, of which the cause is purely due to men accounting for about 30%, combined with female factors accounting for about 20% - bringing the total infertility rate with male factors up to 50%. This is an alarming number.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang shares his experience in diagnosing and treating male infertility.
Especially in the People's Public Security Forces, the risk of infertility tends to increase due to the nature of the profession. Many officers and soldiers often work under stress, stay up late, and are exposed to toxic environments such as high-frequency waves and chemicals, which directly affect reproductive health.
However, current periodic health check-ups still mainly focus on systemic diseases, not paying due attention to male reproductive health check-ups. This is a gap that needs to be filled and it is recommended to include male health check-ups in the general health check-up program. At the same time, propaganda should be strengthened so that officers and soldiers pay attention to reproductive health care. "Hospitals in the People's Public Security Force need to have a final reproductive health care unit for officers and soldiers, so that they do not have to go elsewhere for infertility treatment, but can be treated right in their own hospitals," said Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang.
The workshop was attended by many hospitals and clinics in police units.
Agreeing with this view, Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Hoang Lam, former Director of the Military Clinical Embryology Institute, a reporter at the Workshop, hopes that in the coming time, the Central Public Security Party Committee and the Ministry of Public Security will pay attention to the Public Security Health Sector, especially developing a Center for Reproductive Support and Gender Medicine, to ensure the task of treatment and health care for officers and soldiers in particular and the people in general.
Major Nguyen Tran Thanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology and Andrology, Hospital 19-8, said that infertility treatment is a process that takes a lot of time and effort. In addition, many officers and soldiers have reproductive health problems but are not examined and treated promptly due to the nature of their work. Specialized hospitals are often very crowded, while officers and soldiers are often on duty, making it difficult to arrange for examinations.
"According to a hospital survey, more than 50% of soldiers want the Ministry of Public Security's hospital to have a reproductive support center to meet the treatment needs of officers and people. Therefore, Hospital 19-8 is developing a project to establish a Center for Reproductive Support and Gender Medicine to facilitate officers and soldiers in examination, treatment and health care," Major Thanh shared.

Currently, infertility treatment is not covered by health insurance, which is a big difficulty and barrier for many infertile couples. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thanh Tuyen, Hospital 19-8 is promoting investment in equipment and testing machines to treat infertility. For officers and soldiers, the infertility treatment package will be calculated and supported, which can reduce costs by only calculating chemicals and materials, the price to be paid will be much lower than at other hospitals. Police officers and soldiers enjoy the best preferential policies.
Director of 19-8 Hospital Hoang Thanh Tuyen presented flowers to the reporters.
At the workshop, delegates listened to many scientific reports from leading experts. The knowledge and experience shared has and will help doctors working in hospitals and clinics of the People's Public Security Forces update more professional knowledge and new techniques in examining, treating and taking care of the health of officers, soldiers and people.
