Cho Ray Hospital transfers more than 4,000 units of blood to support Can Tho

Báo Cần ThơBáo Cần Thơ11/06/2023

(VNA) - According to information from Cho Ray Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, this unit has transferred 4,000 units of packed red blood cells and 27 separated platelets to Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.

After receiving the dispatch from Can Tho General Hospital, the Blood Transfusion Center, Cho Ray Hospital reviewed the unit's blood supply capacity. In April and May, the Center supported Can Tho General Hospital with 4,000 units of packed red blood cells and 27 units of apheresis platelets. This amount of support only met about 50% of the request of Can Tho General Hospital.

It is known that the Blood Transfusion Center, Cho Ray Hospital, can only produce a maximum of 60-65 separated platelets per day, and Cho Ray Hospital alone uses about 50 blocks per day. Therefore, the remaining number of separated platelets is very small. Meanwhile, platelets can only be stored for a maximum of 5 days. On average, each month, the Blood Transfusion Center, Cho Ray Hospital aims to receive from 13,000 to 15,000 units of blood per month. However, in the summer, the amount of blood received is only about 12,000 units per month due to a decrease in blood donors. This amount is used to supply Cho Ray Hospital and hospitals in the Southeast region. Meanwhile, the hospital's reserve must retain about 2% of the blood base for natural disasters and catastrophes. To have blood to support Can Tho Blood Transfusion Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital must draw from this 2% of blood reserve. It is expected that in June, July, and August 2023, Cho Ray Hospital will continue to support 1,000 units of packed red blood cells per month for Can Tho HH-TM Hospital.

Previously, according to a report from Can Tho General Hospital, due to some problems in the bidding process for purchasing chemicals, supplies, and medical equipment in 2023-2024, the hospital did not have enough blood bags, chemicals, and medical supplies to receive and screen blood. Meanwhile, the unit is responsible for supplying blood and blood products to 74 hospitals in the Mekong Delta. This has caused many hospitals to suffer from a serious shortage of blood.

Faced with the above situation, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management - Ministry of Health has assigned the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the National Blood Center to coordinate with the Blood Transfusion Centers of Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion - Hematology Hospital and other Blood Transfusion Centers to provide blood and products to support hospitals within the scope of blood supply of Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.

From March 2023 to present, the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital, and the Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital have coordinated and supported the provision of 20,205 units of red blood cells to Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.
