In recent weeks, the provincial General Hospital has continued to face a serious shortage of blood, greatly affecting emergency care and treatment for patients as well as blood distribution to other medical facilities.

Master Hoang Quoc Anh - Deputy Head of the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion, Provincial General Hospital said: "In the past time, the hospital has continuously faced a shortage of blood. And this time, the shortage has become more serious, the blood bank currently has less than 170 units of blood, this is the lowest level ever. With this amount of blood, it is only enough to use for 3 - 5 days".

Nguyen Thi Hanh from Ky Anh commune went to the provincial general hospital to donate blood.

To solve the blood shortage, as many times before, the Provincial General Hospital had to proactively mobilize patients' families, call on organizations, unions, businesses and even medical staff. In addition, the hospital also called on social networks for people to come directly to the hospital to donate blood.

Responding to the call of the Provincial General Hospital, regardless of the long distance, Nguyen Thi Hanh (born in 1999, residing in Ky Anh commune) and her friends took the bus to the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Department to donate 2 units of blood, contributing to overcoming the blood shortage at the hospital.

“I hope my work will contribute to the blood bank to help doctors and nurses provide emergency care and treatment for patients. I also hope that more people will volunteer to come to the hospital to donate blood in the current context of blood shortages,” Nguyen Thi Hanh shared.

The provincial general hospital's blood bank has less than 170 units of blood left.

It is known that during the blood donation campaigns, many organizations and individuals volunteered to come to the Provincial General Hospital to donate blood units to supplement the blood bank. This is a noble and humane gesture to help medical facilities have more blood sources for emergency and treatment of patients.

“The hospital is extremely grateful for the kindness, humanitarian spirit and companionship of organizations and individuals with the hospital in the situation of blood shortage. However, these are only temporary solutions, because in this serious blood shortage, on average, only about 10 units of blood are donated each day, meeting only 1/5 of the hospital's needs. If there is no timely solution, in the coming days, there is a very high risk that the hospital and many other medical facilities will no longer have blood for emergency and treatment purposes,” added Master Hoang Quoc Anh.

According to analysis, one of the reasons why Ha Tinh medical facilities are constantly facing a shortage of blood is that after operating the two-level local government, voluntary blood donation campaigns have not been organized in a timely manner. Up to now, only two units, Ky Hoa commune and Thien Cam commune, have organized voluntary blood donation campaigns.

To solve the blood shortage, the health sector has had to mobilize all staff in the sector. However, this is only a temporary solution.

Faced with this situation, the Provincial General Hospital has sent a document to the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee and the Ha Tinh Provincial Red Cross Society to urge, direct, and soon develop a plan to collect blood at new administrative units of communes and wards. However, according to the response document of the Provincial Red Cross Society, because some communes and wards have not yet completed the Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee, it is difficult to direct blood donation activities. This poses more difficulties and challenges for medical facilities in ensuring blood sources when voluntary blood donation activities are not urged, directed, and implemented promptly.

Mr. Mai Le Thuoc - Deputy Director of Ha Tinh Department of Health said: "The shortage of blood at medical facilities is extremely tense, greatly affecting the emergency and treatment work for patients. In order to promptly supplement blood sources for medical facilities, the most important thing is that the standing agency of the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation must really get involved, promote the role of urging and directing the communes and wards to quickly complete the Steering Committee and have a timely blood donation plan.

At the same time, it is recommended that communes and wards, while the Steering Committee has not yet been established, temporarily assign the Youth Union to develop and implement a plan to mobilize voluntary blood donation in accordance with the province's direction. In the long term, it is necessary to quickly complete the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at the commune level. If the standing body of the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation and the heads of communes and wards do not take drastic action, the shortage of blood at medical facilities will be difficult to solve.
