Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai - Vice President of Can Tho University spoke at the seminar.

Opening the discussion topic, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Economic and Urban Newspaper Nguyen Xuan Khanh said: “Climate change is happening at a faster and more severe rate and is becoming a global urgent issue. Vietnam is one of the countries most severely affected, especially in coastal areas and low-lying deltas such as the Mekong Delta.”

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khanh said that over the past time, Vietnam has built and persistently implemented the Party and State's policies and guidelines on proactively and actively cooperating internationally in responding to and adapting to climate change. Thanks to that, many important results have been achieved, contributing to the completion of socio-economic development goals and promoting sustainable development. However, Vietnam is still one of the countries most vulnerable to threats from climate change, especially frequent flooding in coastal and delta areas - where there is a dense river system and low-lying terrain.

Natural disasters have long been a challenge for Vietnam, but in recent decades, extreme events have become increasingly intense and unpredictable. Therefore, the problem of attracting resources, especially climate finance, remains challenging, especially for developing and vulnerable countries like Vietnam.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), by the end of 2020, developed countries had provided up to 83.3 billion USD worth of climate finance to vulnerable countries, including private investments. Therefore, many countries and international organizations, especially the United States and the European Union (EU), have made many commitments to support climate finance for vulnerable countries.

Along with that, the idea of debt relief for poor countries in exchange for "green" investment projects is considered quite comprehensive to simultaneously solve many problems that countries around the world are facing, including Vietnam.

“Central and local press agencies have been actively communicating about climate change in recent times, contributing to spreading the message for a green Vietnam. Kinh te & Do thi newspaper is also gradually building a series of in-depth, systematic, and long-term articles on this field,” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khanh shared.

The seminar “Green Swap: Bridging Climate Finance and Sustainable Development” took place in 2 sessions. In session 1 with the theme “Who owes whom”, speakers shared about some contents such as: adaptation to climate change in Vietnam today; which groups of people are most affected by natural disasters; "Financial justice and climate debt"...

In session 2, representatives of press and media agencies shared strategies and tactics for creating news, articles, photos, radio and television programs and other press works on climate change and responding to climate change in a methodical, stable, systematic, long-term and professional manner.
