20 years ago, Mr. Lam Thanh Thuong brought the citrus growing profession from Dong Thap to Hieu Liem (Bac Tan Uyen district) to start a business. Mr. Thuong said that Hieu Liem commune is located next to the Be and Dong Nai rivers, very suitable for developing a farm economy .

According to him, compared to other provinces in the West, citrus trees grown in Hieu Liem have their own advantages. The commune is located on a high hillside, with good drainage. The roots of orange and tangerine trees grow deep into the ground without fear of damage due to flooding. The lifespan of the trees can therefore be as long as 15 years, instead of only 5-7 years as in the Southwest. The soil here is suitable, so the fruit is firm and has a high sweetness.

With an area of over 150 hectares, each year, his farm sells nearly 5,000 tons of citrus fruits of all kinds. On average, each year he earns more than 20 billion VND in profit.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tien - Director of Dan Tien Agricultural Cooperative in Tan Dinh commune (Bac Tan Uyen district) also said that the irrigation system and good traffic infrastructure also create conditions for the locality to strongly develop the commodity economy with fruit trees.

Currently, the Bac Tan Uyen citrus fruit brand is dominating the mid-range and high-end segments. Many farms and orchards in Bac Tan Uyen have traders coming to buy their products at stable high prices.

Not only in Bac Tan Uyen, concentrated citrus production areas have also clearly formed in many northern districts of the province. "More and more farmers are applying VietGAP production, aiming for organic to help products achieve quality," said Mr. Tien.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Binh Duong has an area of over 8,181 hectares of fruit trees. Of which, citrus fruits cover over 4,631 hectares, accounting for 56.6%. The total area of fruit trees meeting VietGAP certification standards is 1,078 hectares.

In addition, mangosteen growing areas are concentrated in Thuan An City, Ben Cat and Dau Tieng District, accounting for over 88% of the province's mangosteen area.

The highlight is the fruit growing area that is forming strongly in the riverside communes.

The formation of concentrated production areas creates favorable conditions for the application of synchronous science and technology on large areas; shortens the productivity gap between households, and increases the average productivity of the whole region.

However, a major limitation in Binh Duong today is that vegetables and fruits in general are mainly consumed fresh. Products are mainly brought directly to the place of consumption after being stored for a short time in the warehouses.

The main market for Binh Duong fruit industry is still domestic consumption, only some fruit products such as bananas, durian, and grapefruit are exported.

The scale of production and processing facilities is still small. By the end of 2023, the province has 10 fruit processing and preliminary processing facilities; 13 fruit export packaging facilities with 16 packaging facility codes.

According to Mr. Mai Hung Dung - Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, the conversion of crop structure and the conversion of crop structure on rice land is still slow. Farmers' ability to invest in technology and finance is still limited. Therefore, the development of specialized fruit growing areas as well as the expansion of VietGAP and organic models face many obstacles.

Agricultural mechanization and high-tech application have not yet created breakthroughs to increase the added value and competitiveness of agricultural products. The southern urban areas of the province have a rapid urbanization rate, the scale of agricultural land area is fragmented, causing difficulties in supporting production development.

To effectively implement the policy of supporting production and consumption linkage, meeting export requirements, the province's key fruit growing areas need to be oriented towards sustainable development towards concentrated, high-quality commodity production, enhancing competitiveness in the market.

Recently, the Provincial People's Committee issued Plan 3092 to implement the Project on developing key fruit trees, flowers, ornamental plants, safe vegetable production and fruit and vegetable processing industry by 2030 in the province.

The plan targets the fruit tree area in Binh Duong to reach about 10,600 hectares by 2025, and 13,000 hectares by 2030. In particular, the province aims to develop 4 main fruit trees including citrus, mangosteen, durian, and banana.

Fruit growing areas will develop in 2 regions with suitable soil and climate conditions:

Fruit growing areas along Be River, Dong Nai River (in Tan Uyen City, Bac Tan Uyen District, Phu Giao District). This area is adjacent to famous fruit growing areas such as Tan Trieu, Hieu Liem, Tan Binh, Binh Loi... in Vinh Cuu District (Don Nai Province). This is a favorable condition for regional linkage, developing specialized citrus growing areas for the locality.

Next is the fruit growing area along the Saigon River and Thi Tinh River (in Thuan An City, Ben Cat, Bau Bang District, and Dau Tieng District). This area grows many types of fruit trees, of which mangosteen is highly valued for its quality and has a brand name.
