According to these sources, Chinese airlines are holding discussions on the size of the order.
One source said the deal could include orders for 300 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, while a second source said the order could range from 200 to 500 aircraft.
However, sources noted that negotiations are still ongoing, and it could take longer to reach a final deal.
In addition, these people said wide-body aircraft will make up the majority of Airbus' new orders, including the Airbus A330neo line.
Observers say that if this order reaches 500 aircraft, it will be one of Airbus's largest orders ever and certainly China's largest.
The order would also surpass a record $37 billion order for 300 narrow-body Airbus aircraft in 2022 from China's top three airlines, Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines.
Airbus and the Civil Aviation Administration of China have not yet commented on the above information.
The deal to buy the aircraft could come as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders are scheduled to visit China in July, to mark the 50th anniversary of China-European Union (EU) diplomatic relations.
If successful, the deal between Airbus and China would send a message to US President Donald Trump, as Washington and Beijing face difficulties in trade negotiations.
If the world’s two largest economies resolve their differences, Airbus rival Boeing could emerge as the winner. However, Boeing has not won a major order from China since 2017 due to trade tensions.
