Despite having a large team of chauffeurs, Queen Elizabeth II is known for her passion for cars. She learned to drive a truck during the war and is often photographed driving around the royal estates. In particular, the Queen owns an impressive collection of cars, mostly Land Rover models - a symbol of British luxury and style.
Queen Elizabeth II and her passion for cars.
The Queen's favorite cars
Land Rovers take centre stage in her collection, with models such as the Defender, Range Rover and Series I. These vehicles are not only used for transportation but have also been part of major exhibitions, including a recent one at Pebble Beach. This particular collection reflects the Queen’s elegant taste and is a symbol of her connection to British motoring culture.
Historic Royal Cars
Two of the Queen's oldest cars are on display, both dating back to 1954. One is a Land Rover Series I State Review with a number of royal modifications, including a custom rear sill. The car was used on the Queen's post-coronation Commonwealth tour.
Another Land Rover Series I belonged to King George VI, the Queen's father, and was later used to transport the Royal Family around Balmoral. These cars are not only symbols of luxury but also carry deep historical value.
Elegance and comfort in royal cars
Also in the Queen's collection is a 1958 Land Rover Series II State Review, specially designed with a blue light to indicate when a member of the royal family is inside. Despite being a reserve vehicle, the car has only covered around 13,000 miles in its entire life.
The Queen also drives a 1966 Land Rover Series IIa, which was customised with leather seats, running boards and even a “wooden dog guard” to keep her beloved corgis safe. Another similar vehicle, a 1983 Defender 110 V8, was also fitted with custom features such as leather seats and running boards.
The Queen's special Range Rover
The Queen also owns a 1974 Range Rover State Review, which entered service in 1975 and remained in service until 2002. It is equipped with an umbrella stand and an exhaust system to reduce noise from the large V8 engine.
Another Range Rover, the 1990 State Review, even featured in the Queen and Prince Philip's 1994 Christmas card, showing its importance to the royal family.
The Queen's collection also includes two Range Rovers painted burgundy, the traditional royal colour. The vehicles are decorated with badges and stripes along the body, including a 1996 Range Rover P38 State I Royal Review and a 2005 Range Rover L322 State Review.
One of the Queen's favourite cars
The 2009 Range Rover quickly became one of the Queen's favourite cars, and she is often photographed driving around the royal estates. The car is currently on display but has undergone a number of changes, including the removal of the Labrador mascot from the hood.
