According to an update from the WHO European Regional Focal Point for the International Health Regulations (IHR), the cases in Russia have been identified as being caused by Mycoplasma bacteria – a respiratory infection agent. This type of bacteria can damage the lining of the throat, trachea and lungs, and is spread through small droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The disease can be treated with antibiotics.
WHO is continuing to work with Russian health authorities to clarify further information.
On the Vietnamese side, the Department of Disease Prevention affirmed that it will continue to closely monitor the situation, closely coordinate with WHO and Russian IHR focal points to update accurate and timely information. The Ministry of Health emphasized its stance of not causing panic among the public, but also not being subjective, especially in the context of changing seasons - favorable conditions for respiratory diseases.
Previously, since March 31, several international news sites reported on the phenomenon of many people in Russia contracting a strange disease. Patients initially had common symptoms such as fatigue, aches and pains, and then became more severe with high fever, coughing up blood, and some cases had to be bedridden. Notably, test results showed that many patients were negative for Covid-19 and seasonal flu.
