Ministry of Health investigates case of hundreds of people poisoned after eating bread in Ho Chi Minh City

The Department of Food Safety, Ministry of Health today (November 10) sent a document to the Department of Food Safety of Ho Chi Minh City regarding the investigation and handling of a suspected food poisoning case.

According to a document issued by the Food Safety Department signed by Dr. Pharmacist Chu Quoc Thinh - Acting Director of the Food Safety Department, the Food Safety Department received information on November 7, 2025 in Hanh Thong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, a number of people were hospitalized for suspected food poisoning after eating bread.

After the meal, symptoms such as stomachache, diarrhea, high fever appeared and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Food Safety Department said that immediately after the incident, it coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to request a quick report on the poisoning incident, closely monitor the situation and deploy solutions to ensure the health of the poisoned people and prevent similar incidents from happening.

The Food Safety Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to investigate and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food suspected of causing poisoning.

At the same time, the Food Safety Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Department to direct hospitals with patients being treated to focus resources on actively treating food poisoning patients so as not to affect their health and lives.

Organize investigations and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food suspected of causing poisoning; take food and disease samples for testing to find the cause; investigate and strictly handle violations of food safety regulations (if any), and publicize the results to promptly warn the community.

To prevent similar incidents from happening, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and the Department of Food Safety are requested to strictly implement the instructions of the Ministry of Health in Official Dispatch No. 2633/BYT-ATTP dated April 30, 2025 on strengthening food safety, preventing fake food and food poisoning;

Official Dispatch No. 7598/BYT-ATTP dated October 20, 2025 on strengthening the work of ensuring food safety in schools and collective kitchens and Official Dispatch No. 271/ATTP-NDTT dated February 18, 2025 of the Department of Food Safety on ensuring food safety, preventing food poisoning and foodborne diseases in the area in 2025.

At the same time, strengthen propaganda and guidance for food service establishments to ensure food safety conditions, strictly control the origin and source of food ingredients, ensure hygiene during the process of preliminary processing, processing, transporting food, three-step food inspection, and keeping food samples. Propaganda for people in choosing food as well as food processing service establishments serving crowded events.

Regarding this poisoning case, as reported by Health and Life on November 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health informed about suspected cases of poisoning after eating bread at Ms. B's Toad Bread shop, location 1 Nguyen Thai Son (Hanh Thong ward) and location 2 Le Quang Dinh (Binh Loi Trung ward).

Accordingly, as of 8am on November 10, 235 suspected cases of poisoning had been examined and treated at 13 hospitals in the area. Of these, 96 cases were being treated as inpatients, most of whom are currently stable.

Most of the poisoning cases were caused by eating bread at the branch at 1 Nguyen Thai Son. Currently, the two bread selling establishments have temporarily stopped operating, all food and ingredients have been sealed and samples have been taken for testing. The inspection team is expanding the verification of related cases at many hospitals to determine the cause and handle them according to regulations.

Clinical and laboratory data showed that the majority of patients had intestinal infections, most likely caused by Salmonella - a common cause of food poisoning.
