Ministry of Health requests investigation into food origin that poisoned 7 people after eating buffet

A suspected food poisoning incident occurred after eating a buffet at a restaurant in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province, causing 7 people to be hospitalized with symptoms of stomachache, vomiting, and diarrhea.

On June 5, according to information from the Food Safety Department (Ministry of Health ), the department received information about a suspected food poisoning case that occurred after eating a buffet at a restaurant in Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province, causing 7 people to be hospitalized with symptoms of stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The Food Safety Department has issued Official Dispatch No. 1181/ATTP-NDTT requesting the Phu Yen Provincial Department of Health to urgently direct hospitals with patients being treated to focus resources on actively treating food poisoning patients so as not to affect their health and lives.

Relevant units shall organize investigations and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food suspected of causing poisoning; take food samples and specimens for testing to find the cause; temporarily suspend the operation of meal processing facilities suspected of causing food poisoning; investigate and strictly handle violations of food safety regulations (if any), and publicize the results to promptly warn the community.

The Ministry of Health also requested relevant units to strengthen propaganda and guidance for food service establishments to ensure food safety conditions, strictly control the origin and source of food ingredients, ensure hygiene throughout the process of preliminary processing, processing, and transporting food, three-step food inspection, and food sample storage. Propaganda for people in choosing food as well as food processing service establishments serving crowded events.

The Food Safety Department also requires reporting results to the department according to regulations.

Regarding this suspected poisoning case, Dong Hoa Town Medical Center received 7 patients on June 3, diagnosed with food poisoning.

Of the 7 people hospitalized, 6 were from the same family. On the afternoon of June 2, a group of 10 people ate a snail and seafood buffet at a restaurant in Tuy Hoa for 140,000 VND/person. Two people in the group did not eat and did not have any unusual symptoms. At 7 p.m. the same day, 7 people vomited, had diarrhea, and had stomachaches. They took medicine but it did not help, so they were hospitalized the next day.
