The Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) are continuing their “fight firmly, advance firmly” tactics on the southern Donetsk front, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) are having a hard time defending. In this area, the RFAF Vostok Group is preparing to attack the small but well-defended village of Komar. Komar village is considered a new defensive “node” in the “Donetsk arc”, replacing Velyka Novosyolka, after this stronghold was overrun by Russian troops. Around Komar village, there are several small villages, but they have limited defensive capabilities. If RFAF captures Komar, they will be at the gateway to Dnepropetrovsk province.
The situation remains difficult for the AFU in the Pokrovsk region, where the RFAF is tightening its siege; especially from the south of the city and it is likely that the offensive will begin from there. However, other options for attack are not excluded. In particular, after a lull of several months, powerful strikes by the Russian tactical air force, using FAB bombs with UMPK guided glider modules, have begun again. Recently, the Russian Ministry of Defense released a video of the attack with FAB UMPK bombs, on the temporary garrison (PVD) of the AFU in the Novoekonomichne urban area, east of Pokrovsk. Recently, Ukraine publicly announced on social media that, after about a year and a half of “suffering”, they were able to neutralize Russia’s FAB UMPK bomb, by jamming the transmission with the UMPK module on the FAB bomb; making these bombs fly inaccurately. There was actually less information on the Internet about the Russian tactical air force attacks using the FAB UMPK bomb. But Russian engineers quickly overcame it, not only improving the anti-electronic warfare capabilities, the flight range of the FAB UMPK bomb was increased by up to 30%. In the attack on Novoekonomichne, four FAB UMPK bombs (presumably 250 kg bombs) were fired “very precisely” along a road. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that the airstrikes coincided with the movement of the enemy motorized convoy.
Another video of the attack on the AFU food warehouses on the outskirts of the border village of Alekseyevka in the Sumy region, also released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, was released. The FAB UMPK bombs hit the target accurately; as a result, only memories of these facilities remained. In another attack, the RFAF launched a missile attack on an AFU training ground in Poltava Oblast. According to an AFU spokesman, thanks to a series of preventive measures, none of the AFU servicemen present at the training ground at the time of the attack were killed; however, several were injured. According to the Ukrainian commander, Ukrainian soldiers training at the training ground quickly sought shelter when the alarm was raised. This is the second attack on AFU training centers in recent times. The first attack, carried out on June 1, on the 239th AFU Combined Arms Training Center in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, was carried out with Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles, using cluster munitions; it caused significant losses in personnel. An earlier attack on an AFU training center prompted the commander of the AFU ground forces, General Mykhailo Drapatiy, to resign. However, instead of accepting the resignation, Ukrainian President Zelensky appointed General Drapatiy as commander of the Joint Forces. According to Resident, the RFAF began its summer campaign in May, when it increased pressure along almost the entire front line, from the Sumy region to Zaporizhia. At the same time, the West believes that Moscow is preparing another offensive in late summer or early autumn.
According to Western intelligence, Russia is preparing a new major offensive operation in late summer - early autumn, the RFAF General Staff has the necessary reserves, but where to attack is still unknown. Currently, the northern direction is proposed to create a security buffer zone. But all options will depend on the situation on the front line. In this context, the Ukrainian military recruitment centers are concerned that without the possibility of increasing the reserve force, the AFU may not be able to maintain the entire front line. To increase the mobilization capacity, the best solution is to lower the conscription age from 25 to 18 years old; at the same time, legalize the mobilization of women into the AFU under the military service regime. Given the possibility of the RFAF launching a summer-autumn campaign along the entire front, the above issues regarding recruitment should be addressed by the Ukrainian legislative bodies now, so that by the fall the AFU will have time to form a reserve force.
Now the British intelligence agency MI6 has received new intelligence about the Kremlin's readiness to launch a major offensive in Ukraine in the fall, which has raised concerns among British intelligence about the AFU's ability to withstand the entire front. "We are advised to increase mobilization and call up young people over 20 years old to form a reserve force," Resident wrote. (photo source Military Review, Ukrinform, Rvvoenkory).
