The Australian Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued an urgent warning about the growing market for counterfeit Labubu dolls that could pose a choking hazard to children.
These counterfeit products, often referred to as “Lafufus”, can be dangerous due to removable parts or poor quality stitching, according to the ACCC.

In addition, the agency also expressed concerns that fake dolls may contain toxic chemicals, including lead, which can cause serious health effects.
“Be aware of the safety risks associated with counterfeit Labubu doll products and keep them away from young children at all times,” the ACCC warned in a press release issued on Wednesday.
The ACCC highlighted that some counterfeit Labubu dolls were so small they could fit completely into a child's mouth, while others had removable parts such as eyes, arms or legs, posing a choking hazard.
Authorities recommend that consumers should only buy genuine Labubu dolls produced by Pop Mart company.
Real dolls have nine teeth, small ears, and strong stitching. Counterfeit dolls, on the other hand, often have large ears, rough stitching, poor quality fabric, or mismatched details, and are sold for much cheaper, while real dolls range in price from $32 for a small model to about $340 for a large version.
The Australian state of New South Wales Health Department notes that even low levels of lead exposure can affect children's physical and mental development. In adults, lead can cause high blood pressure, kidney damage and impaired brain function.
If a child is suspected of being exposed to lead from a toy or item, the Sydney Children's Hospital network recommends that parents stop using it immediately, discard the product and contact their local poisons information centre for advice.
