Handwritten note of the song "Vam Co Dong"

The first manuscript of the song “Vam Co Dong” was written by musician Truong Quang Luc in 1966 from the poem of the same name by poet Hoai Vu. For 59 years, this song has accompanied the army and people of Long An in the struggle and construction of the homeland. But few people know the circumstances under which the first manuscript was born.

The first handwritten note of the song "Vam Co Dong" was written in 1966.

When writing this song, musician Truong Quang Luc had never been to Long An and the Vam Co River. At that time, he was regrouping in the North. However, with the feeling of seeing every place as his homeland, eagerly waiting for news of victory in his homeland in the cause of liberating the South and unifying the country, he created a very good work.

Musician Truong Quang Luc shared: “I gathered in the North in 1954, but it was not until 1966 that I was able to compose a song about the South that was relatively well received by the people. There is a strange thing in my life that I wrote this song very quickly, only about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It was a "flash" after a period of "emotional incubation" that I had to write about the South.”

Compared to the first handwritten version, the later versions have not changed much. With emotional melodies, both modern and national, sometimes soft and flexible but also heroic, like a narrative about a poor but affectionate countryside. Therefore, the song "Vam Co Dong" has become one of the best sound symbols when mentioning melodies about the homeland of Long An.

With this song, musician Truong Quang Luc received the 3rd Nguyen Thong Literature and Arts Award in 2009 of Long An province. After 1975, the song was also chosen as the theme song of Long An Radio Station.

Handwritten composition of the song "My hometown river"

The song "My hometown river" was written by composer Huyen Nhung in 1974, and it was not until December 1975 that she edited it into a complete version.

Holding in her hand the precious manuscript of the song that has existed for half a century, composer Huyen Nhung cherished and preserved it as her own treasure. Composer Huyen Nhung shared: "The song "My hometown river" was born in the North, not in Long An. When writing this song, I wanted to tell about my homeland, the hardships, sacrifices but bravery, the deep affection like the river of my hometown".

The handwriting of the song "My hometown river" was written in 1974.

As the first revolutionary folk song broadcast after April 30, 1975, at that time, the song satisfied the listeners' ultimate "thirst", because this genre had long been loved by the people of the South, and the compositions written by Saigon artists before liberation were not reused.

The song was performed by two talented artists of the Saigon reformed theater, Le Thuy and Thanh Tuan, making it even more attractive. And since then, the song "My hometown river" has been memorized by non-artists from North to South to sing the most during meetings, holidays, and Tet. That has shown the vitality of a song.

Musician Truong Quang Luc shared more: “During the war, when I went to the northern localities, from the 17th parallel onwards, wherever I went, I listened to my new music song Vam Co Dong. But shortly after liberation, I listened to the song Dong song que em by Huyen Nhung. And then, clearly wherever I went, along with the new music song, I also listened to the new traditional song giao duyen, which was a second creation of the author of traditional songs."

"I think that in literature and art there must be subsequent creations, so when people who have not listened to modern music listen to the new classical music, they will look for the new music song they listen to later, which is also good, because the new classical music song is also the second creation to "give wings" for the new music song to fly. Therefore, I think in literature and art, if there is mutual exchange and support, the work will reach the masses better" - musician Truong Quang Luc said.

“My hometown river” is a harmony of artistic souls, in which there are many literary and artistic genres, independent but combined together in a very harmonious way.

“Vam Co Dong” and “Dong song que em” are works that have left a deep impression in the life of literature and art, because of their enduring vitality and the love of the public. These works have high ideological and artistic value, are the pride of Long An people about the indomitable fighting tradition of the homeland of Vam river and also the pride of Long An province’s literature and art for contributing to enriching the literary and artistic treasure of the country in general and the province in particular. Through these works, wherever they are, everyone knows Long An “Loyal and resilient, the whole people fight the enemy” in the struggle and defense of the Fatherland.

It is thought that the handwriting of these two works should be preserved in the provincial museum to contribute to preserving and promoting the values of documents and artifacts about Long An homeland, so that future generations can know and feel the proud melodies of their homeland./.
