The Ministry of Health informed that every year on May 5, the international community celebrates International Day of the Midwife to honor the silent but immense contributions of midwives in reproductive health care, maternal and child health.

In 2025, with the theme "The vital role of midwives in natural disasters," International Day of the Midwife highlights the irreplaceable role of midwives as the world faces unprecedented crises, from climate change and natural disasters to conflicts and humanitarian emergencies.

Initiated in 1992 by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), International Day of the Midwife has become an occasion to raise global awareness of the essential role of midwifery in health systems and to protect the rights of women and newborns.

In Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Health's study on the current status of human resources for health care positions, by the end of 2024, there will be 24,983 midwives working in public service facilities nationwide. This is the core force in reproductive health care, maternal and newborn health, especially in remote areas that are often affected by natural disasters.

With frequent storms, floods, droughts and landslides, midwives not only perform their professional duties in favorable conditions, but also persevere when the health system is disrupted by natural disasters. Midwives play an essential role in ensuring safe childbirth, detecting and promptly managing pregnancy complications, providing psychological counseling and maintaining reproductive health care services for the community.

The Ministry of Health calls on ministries, sectors, localities and the whole society to continue investing in and supporting the development of a strong midwifery team to meet the needs of maternal and child health care in all circumstances, especially in the context of increasingly complex natural disasters.

From May 1-12, many activities in response to International Midwifery Day will be held nationwide, such as seminars, talks, community communications, and recognition of outstanding midwives, to spread the meaningful message of this day./.
