Coffee consumption has previously been shown to help reduce the risk of some natural signs of aging, such as improved cognitive function and reduced inflammation-related diseases.

This latest study adds another benefit to the long-term effects of regular coffee consumption on aging.

Scientists from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Netherlands) surveyed 1,161 people aged 55 and over through the Netherlands Amsterdam Longitudinal Aging Study, who were followed for 7 years.

The study aimed to investigate the association between coffee consumption and frailty, which is common in older adults.

This condition is defined by the presence of three or more symptoms, among them: weight loss, weakness, fatigue, slow walking speed, and low physical activity.

Drinking coffee regularly, a few cups a day, helps reduce the risk of depression.

Coffee helps reduce the rate of physical weakness

The results showed that more frequent coffee consumption was associated with a lower overall rate of depression. Specifically, regular coffee consumption – several cups a day – was associated with a lower risk of depression, according to Medical Express.

This result is consistent with the recommendation of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that drinking 3 cups of coffee per day is moderate and safe.

The researchers explain that coffee’s effect on reducing frailty may be due in part to the role of antioxidants in coffee, which can help reduce inflammation, atrophy (muscle loss), and prevent muscle damage. Coffee may also help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in older adults.

Lead author Margreet R. Olthof, associate professor at the Amsterdam Institute for Public Health Research, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, said: “Coffee drinking is an important part of many people’s daily routines and as people age, they are constantly looking for ways to maintain their health. The new findings highlight the potential for daily coffee consumption to reduce the risk of frailty in older adults.
