“Talking about pressure is a bit difficult to share, because it cannot be summarized. Having difficulties and challenges is completely reasonable and they happen to help us grow. I accept all of that,” singer Phuong My Chi at the age of 20 shared in a conversation with a reporter from Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper.

* REPORTER: Phuong My Chi has just released the MV "Pick Up the Ox Cart " - a song inspired by the literary work "The Beggar's Wife" by writer Kim Lan. Why has Chi recently focused on creating products that combine traditional and modern elements?

* Singer PHUONG MY CHI: Chi hopes to be a young artist who contributes a small part in conveying cultural and traditional elements in a modern way to young people. Furthermore, Chi has been singing pure traditional folk music for many years, so now is the time to change and open a new door for herself.

* What is special about this door?

* New things are always interesting, making me curious, interested, inspired to learn and conquer. Songs with pentatonic rhythms or new musical materials are extremely interesting and have many things for me to exploit. I feel that Vietnam has special materials. If in the future I have the opportunity to introduce Vietnamese music to international friends, it will be really great.

* In this music project, Chi continues to work with the music production group DTAP - the group that has collaborated with Hoang Thuy Linh on many impressive music projects, also using literary materials. Is Chi worried about her products being compared?

* The comparison is obvious, but Chi sees that each person will have a different way of exploiting and creating. When collaborating with any artist, DTAP always optimizes that person's personality and ability, rather than applying a common formula. In addition, the treasure trove of literature and art is fertile ground for artists to exploit. The more people exploit, the more special and meaningful products there will be, right?

* People pay a lot of attention to the fact that Phuong My Chi became the president of a company at the age of 19-20. What pressures and responsibilities do you face at this age?

* There is pressure in doing anything. Before doing anything, Chi researches carefully, knows her own strength and the amount of work before daring to do it, not just jumping in. Chi's company is a subsidiary (only manages Chi) of a large entertainment company that manages many artists. Luckily, Chi has a very good manager. Chi thinks that at this time, establishing a company will help her learn more things and gain more experience for her future work.

* What do you think is special about your Gen Z generation? Some people say Gen Z is impatient and lacks depth. What do you think about this?

* Gen Z is versatile, hard-working, enthusiastic, and not afraid of change. The second part depends on each person's experience. It's not quite accurate to say that they lack perseverance, and it's quite harsh to ask young people in their 18s and 20s to have depth. Young people are in the process of experiencing life and need to evaluate with an open perspective. Maybe Chi is Gen Z so she is more sympathetic? Chi is not afraid of change, dares to step out of her comfort zone, and is quite stubborn.

Singer Phuong My Chi confided: “Many people say that Chi will stay in the safe zone until the end of her life by singing folk songs, she can still make money, why do she like to change, why do she like challenges... But Chi is a gen Z, she wants to update herself every day, to become the best version of herself. Chi does not want to confine herself to a framework. Now, Chi has grown up. Everyone has to grow up, have new milestones in life, in the artistic path. Chi will not give up on folk songs, she will return in a newer way”.

* Nowadays many artists both sing and compose, do you aim for this?

* In the latest product, everyone was surprised to know that Chi composed a piece of music about Bac Ninh folk songs. Before that, in 2022, in the song Vu tru co anh , Chi composed a piece of ca tru genre. People saw Chi singing southern folk songs, but in fact, Chi had listened to folk songs from all three regions since she was a child. Folk songs have permeated her soul, and now everything comes out very naturally.

Chi often lets her emotions and inspiration speak first, then moves on to her expertise. Chi has DTAP's support in her compositions. Chi studies composition very seriously, studying theory, practice, doing group and independent assignments..., then she dares to produce a product, dares to put her name as a writer. However, Chi does not expect people to call her a composer, because in fact, Chi is still in the process of learning, and needs to compose more.

* Chi will go to university next September. How will she balance everything?

* In the past, when I first became famous, I was both studying and singing, and I was still an excellent student for 12 consecutive years. I don't know if university will be harder or if I will do as well as I did in 12 years of school, but I will try my best. I'm not sure I will study well, because the goal is not grades but mainly the knowledge I learn from teachers and young people and apply it to life.
