Bui Dinh Thang, a former student of class 12D1, Minh Khai High School, Duc Tho District (Ha Tinh), received news on July 18 that he had scored 27.75 points in block C in the graduation exam. Of which, Thang scored 8.75 points in Literature, 9.5 in Geography, and 9.5 in History.
With this score, Thang is likely to be admitted to the PrimaryEducation Pedagogy major at Vinh University (Nghe An). Last year, this major had a standard score of 25.5.
But Thang's joy only lasted for a moment. That day was also the day that Ms. Le Thi Thanh Tu (42 years old, Thang's mother), underwent brain tumor surgery at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi .
"Thinking about my mother in a coma and my father running around everywhere to find money for treatment, I decided not to go to university but to work to reduce the burden on the family," Thang said.
People came to the cultural house of Thuong Tu village to donate money to support Thang, July 26. |
Thang's family had one hectare of rice field and raised livestock and poultry, saving enough to cover expenses for five people. Due to difficult circumstances, Thang tried very hard to study. During his three years at Minh Khai High School, Thang achieved excellent academic performance and was admitted to the Party when he was in 12th grade.
At the end of June, Thang's mother suddenly became seriously ill. After going to the doctor, she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and had to undergo surgery. Mr. Bui Trung Kien (47 years old, Thang's father) used the money he had saved for several tens of millions of dong over the years to take his wife to the hospital, but it was not enough, so he had to borrow from relatives and neighbors.
Currently, Kien and his second son are staying in Hanoi to take care of his wife. Tu has had her second surgery and is still weak, and it is unknown when she will be discharged. Thang is staying in the countryside to look after the house. The youngest sister, 11 years old, has also been seriously ill with tapeworm for more than a week now and is being cared for by a neighbor in the village.

Worried about Thang's family situation and worried that the boy would drop out of school due to difficulties, a week ago, Mr. Nguyen Minh Nhat, Secretary of the Party Cell of Thuong Tu village, held a meeting to ask for opinions from local organizations and authorities to call for donations.
On July 25, Mr. Nhat spoke on the village loudspeaker, calling on people to help Thang have the opportunity to go to university and was immediately responded by the people. The entire village has 350 households, except for 3 families who were away, the rest came to the village cultural house to support. People gave at least 15,000 VND, the average was about 150,000 VND, in some cases 5-7 million VND.
"The village is mainly made up of farmers, with economic difficulties, but everyone wants to contribute a little so that Thang does not have to drop out of school and his mother can have more money for medicine," said Mr. Nhat. In addition, philanthropists in the district, outside the village and other communes also came directly or sent money through the support account.
After one day, the whole village raised 43 million VND. Donors, departments of Duc Tho district, friends and the Fund for connecting love for children of Bui La Nhan's homeland from all over the country also raised more than 50 million VND. On July 27, Mr. Nhat gave nearly 100 million VND in the first round of support to Thang.
Receiving the support, Thang said he was grateful and thankful for everyone's kindness. He planned to keep some money to complete the admission procedures, and send the rest to Hanoi for his father to pay the hospital fees. Recently, Thang's father called and told him to sell the buffalo and mortgage the house papers to continue living at the hospital.
The male student confided that due to his family's difficult circumstances, he initially wanted to go to a military or teacher training school so that his family would not have to worry about tuition fees. However, he also recognized that the standard score for military schools was quite high, so he set his sights on a teacher training major.
"My wish now is for my mother to get well soon. After receiving help from everyone, I will go to university and work part-time," Thang said.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, by the end of the first round of university admission registration in 2023 at the end of July 30, the data recorded on the System showed that a total of more than 660,000 candidates had entered their admission wishes, equivalent to 66% of the number of candidates registering for the high school graduation exam (in 2022, this rate was 64.07%). A total of more than 3.4 million wishes had been registered.
Candidates can register and adjust their university admission wishes until 5:00 p.m. on July 30. Thus, candidates have just over one day left to register their wishes. Experts recommend that candidates should not wait until the last day to register and adjust their wishes because there is a risk of network congestion.
