Vietnamese Pangasius gets tax reduction in the US

VnExpressVnExpress13/09/2023

VASEP said that the anti-dumping tax on tra fish imported into the US has decreased compared to the same period last year.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that the US Federal Register has had preliminary results of the 19th administrative review of anti-dumping tax on frozen pangasius fillets with positive results. This is one of the key products of the Vietnamese pangasius industry when participating in this market.

Two Vietnamese pangasius exporting enterprises are mandatory defendants, including Vinh Hoan Corporation (Vinh Hoan Corp) and Can Tho Seafood Import-Export Corporation (Caseamex), which enjoy tax rates of 0 USD per kg and 0.14 USD per kg, respectively.

Other businesses also enjoying a tax of 0.14 USD per kg are IDI CORP, Cafatex Seafood Joint Stock Company, Loc Kim Chi Seafood Joint Stock Company and Hung Vuong Joint Stock Company.

According to VASEP, this preliminary tax rate is lower than the previous final result.

The anti-dumping tax imposed on most Vietnamese companies last September was $2.39 per kilogram. Others were subject to tariffs ranging from zero to $3.87 per kilogram.

The US is one of the main export markets for Vietnamese pangasius. VASEP data shows that in 2015 and 2016 (2 years after the two countries established a Comprehensive Partnership), this was the largest market. Since 2019, the US has maintained its position as the second largest market, after China. Vietnam mainly exports frozen pangasius fillets to the US; frozen pangasius slices and chunks; frozen breaded pangasius; puffed dried pangasius, fried pangasius skin.

After 10 years of establishing a comprehensive partnership, export turnover to this market has increased by 41%.

As of August 15, pangasius exports to the US reached 169 million USD, down 59% compared to the same period last year due to inflation, economic downturn, and especially high inventories.

VASEP assessed that with the preliminary tax reduction, along with the end of the holiday season in the US, inventory gradually decreased, the market may have positive changes.
