Ha Tu Coal is one of the units that suffered heavy damage during the storm season of 2024. Quickly learning from experience, from the beginning of 2025, Ha Tu Coal focused many resources to dredge the entire volume of mud that had drifted to the bottom of the mine.
According to Mr. Ngo Duy Da, Head of the Company's Investment and Environment Department, implementing this year's storm prevention plan, since mid-April, Ha Tu Coal has completed 28 items and works related to storm prevention such as: Renovating embankments, settling pits, drainage ditches, dredging streams, and mine drainage belts. Drainage systems at all levels have been constructed, ensuring the task of effectively directing water to settling pits.
Regarding the drainage of the mine water, Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company currently has 12 main pumping systems and 3 backup pumping systems. The drainage pumping plan has also been specifically developed, in accordance with the weather developments. In addition to ensuring the drainage capacity in the mining area during the rainy season, the unit also actively inspects the lightning protection and power supply systems; ensuring that these systems operate smoothly and stably during this year's rainy season.
"The company has completed the calibration testing of electrical equipment installed at the 35/6kV transformer station, the 6/0.4kV power station, and the 7.2kV outdoor electrical cabinet supplying electric excavators, drills, and water pumps. At the same time, the unit has also completed the calibration of safety equipment and grounding and lightning protection measuring instruments periodically in 2025, to ensure that possible damage is limited during the storm season," added Mr. Pham Minh Duc, Manager of the Water Pumping - Road Construction Site, Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company - Vinacomin.
For underground coal mining, currently, 100% of mines have completed dredging the central pumping tunnel, and expanded dredging of ditches, especially in the main cross-seam mine area. In case of prolonged heavy rain, the main and backup pumping stations must ensure the capacity to pump and drain water, dry the mine as quickly as possible, and protect the production area to the maximum.
Since the beginning of 2025, the units have also inspected, repaired, overhauled, and replaced pump systems, valves, and accessories for the pumping pit to ensure drainage capacity in case of heavy rain; the main and backup pumping station systems and equipment have been upgraded.
While mines have ensured safe production when the storm season comes, at downstream units, all plans are ready to protect resources.
When the first heavy rains of the season came, it was time for Da Bac - TKV Logistics Company to self-assess the quality of storm protection locations; the unit had completed them before the rainy season on April 20. Coal outside the yard was covered with waterproof tarpaulin to prevent coal from drifting and being lost. Units were on duty 24/7, and rescue machinery and equipment were arranged at each key point to be ready to handle any incident as soon as it occurred.
Mr. Vu Hong Manh, Deputy Director of the Company, said: For Da Bac Logistics Company, storm prevention is not simply a seasonal task, but a race against time to ensure the safety of millions of tons of coal, for people and for the entire logistics chain in operation. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, the Company has developed a natural disaster prevention and search and rescue plan that is realistic, close to the terrain and close to each location of the coal warehouse, conveyor belt, drainage system, and coal export port. In particular, the "4 on-site" motto is concretized by detailed plans for each key location, each situation of prolonged heavy rain, flooding, and landslides on coal transportation routes.
According to the meteorological agency, 2025 is considered a hot year and the sea surface temperature in the oceans remains very high. This is one of the unfavorable factors that can lead to the formation of strong storms. There is a possibility of storms or tropical depressions appearing early in late May or early June. Heavy rains and storms that tend to be stronger than last year are a real risk that needs to be properly assessed by TKV and coal industry units to have preventive measures.
In 2025, the Group strives to produce nearly 37 million tons of clean coal domestically, consume 50 million tons of coal, of which 42 million tons are for electricity production, with revenue of about 173,000 billion VND; and pay over 17,000 billion VND to the budget in Quang Ninh. Ensuring storm prevention and maintaining production pace will help the Group complete this task, ensuring energy security for other economic sectors.
