How to protect your health when watching the April 30 parade in hot weather

(PLVN) - In recent days, many people have eagerly poured into the streets to watch the parades and marches celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 197-April 30, 202). However, standing for long periods under the hot sun can have a significant impact on health, especially for the elderly and children.

The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) has just issued some recommendations to protect health when participating in crowded outdoor activities in hot weather.

Accordingly, people need to pay attention to some signs of heat stroke when doing outdoor activities such as: cramps, unusual sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea...

Tips to protect your health in hot weather

Always keep your body cool: People should stay in the shade as much as possible to limit direct exposure to sunlight. Rest often, do not work continuously for long periods of time. Prioritize outdoor activities during the coolest times of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, if possible.

Drink water regularly throughout the day, don't wait until you're thirsty. Always carry a water bottle with you and refill your water when needed. Limit drinks that are high in sugar, salt, caffeine or alcohol as they can dehydrate your body more quickly. Check the color of your urine, if it's pale yellow or clear, it's a sign that your body is getting enough water.

Limit alcohol, beer, coffee and sweets; Eat small meals, divided into many times a day; Wear light, loose and airy clothes; Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect from the sun; Bathe or wipe your body with cool water if necessary.

If you feel unwell, seek medical help immediately if you experience: dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, severe thirst or headache. Move to a cool area as soon as possible and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Note on child care when participating in outdoor activities

In particular, to ensure the safety of young children, parents need to take note of some measures. First of all, it is necessary to choose a safe playing environment, avoid places with stagnant water, trash cans, leaking pipes and limit taking children to crowded areas. Parents should bring hand sanitizer and tissues to clean their children's hands regularly, especially when eating or drinking or after contact with public surfaces.

To prevent mosquito bites, children should wear long-sleeved clothes, apply natural mosquito repellent to their clothes and avoid going out at night. After returning home, check your child for signs of rash, redness or fever and take them to the doctor immediately if there are any unusual symptoms.

In addition, children should only be given home-cooked food and boiled or bottled water; absolutely avoid street food to prevent food poisoning.

Outdoor food safety tips

Food should be cleaned before departure: Fruits and vegetables - including those with skins - should be thoroughly washed under running water before packaging to remove dirt and microorganisms. Before preparing food or eating, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. In case clean water is not available at the entertainment venue, wet wipes and hand sanitizer can be used.

Prepared meals, salads, sandwiches, dairy products and ready-to-eat condiments should be completely cooled before packaging. Place food in a cooler or cooler bag filled with ice or frozen gel, ensuring the temperature stays below 8°C to limit bacterial growth.

After a meal, if there is any food left unused, it should be quickly put into a cooler. If food is left out in the environment for more than 4 hours or the temperature is no longer maintained at a safe level, it should be discarded to avoid the risk of contamination. Note that food should only be reused when proper storage conditions are ensured and there are no signs of spoilage.

Some other notes

When attending crowded events, it is inevitable to have to queue for security checks, use public restrooms, travel by vehicle or even face traffic jams. People are advised to be patient, avoid jostling and pushing. If an incident occurs, stay calm, find a safe exit and move according to the instructions of the authorities.

Since it is possible to get lost, take a photo of each group member before attending so that they can be easily identified if they need to be searched. For young children, parents can write their names and contact phone numbers on a piece of paper and place it in the child’s pocket. In case of losing contact due to mobile network congestion, people should prioritize sending text messages or using social networking applications. At the same time, it is necessary to choose a safe meeting place in advance so that it is easy to gather if the group gets separated.

HCDC encourages people to use public transport to reduce traffic pressure. If you have to travel by private vehicle, remember or mark the parking location for convenience when leaving. For large groups, it is recommended to agree on a meeting point in advance and take photos of each member's clothing to assist in finding them in case they get lost.

When dangerous jostling and pushing situations occur, people need to note: Quickly leave the crowd as soon as you feel signs of danger. Go with the flow of people. Be careful, try not to fall. Keep your hands in an X shape in front of your chest to avoid chest compression. Stay calm, limit screaming to save energy and breath.

Note, when losing property or children, people need to immediately notify the nearest police or security force for support.
