Ha Tinh is a land famous for many specialty orange growing areas such as Khe May orange, Vu Quang orange, Thuong Loc orange... Boldly converting the planting area towards improving quality and applying scientific and technological advances has brought a "golden season" of bumper crops for farmers with high and stable prices, opening up a sustainable development direction for the local key crop.

Thanks to applying organic farming, this crop, nearly 5 hectares of oranges of Mr. Doan Ngoc Bao (village 1 Quang Tho, Vu Quang commune) yielded about 50 tons, the highest ever.
Mr. Bao shared: “Growing oranges in an ecological organic way requires more effort and costs more than conventional farming, but the fruit quality is good and the flavor is unique, so it is favored by consumers. I also actively promote the product on Facebook, Zalo, TikTok, ..., large-scale trade fairs to reach diverse customer groups across the country. Currently, oranges sell for about 40,000 VND/kg, high-quality ones are 65,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, and the "elite" variety alone is 120,000 VND/kg, which is very positively received by the market.”

In recent years, Mr. Doan Quoc Hoai (village 1 Quang Tho, Vu Quang commune) has also focused on developing orange production that meets organic standards.
Mr. Hoai said: “The cultivation process is carried out in a “natural” direction, using biological products from chili, ginger, garlic, wine and agricultural by-products such as straw to cover the roots to retain moisture and create humus for the soil. Previously, the yield was only about 15 tons/ha, now it has increased to nearly 20 tons/ha. Customers are increasingly interested in high-quality orange products, so if we invest in the right direction and build a methodical brand, the product can completely affirm its position and have a high selling price.”

It is known that Vu Quang commune currently has nearly 700 hectares of oranges, of which more than 610 hectares are being harvested, with an estimated output of about 7,100 tons/year. In recent years, the locality has paid special attention to sustainable farming, encouraging people to use microbial fertilizers and biological products to gradually replace chemical materials.
This method not only helps improve the quality and design of products but also protects the ecological environment, creating a foundation for stable and long-term development of orange trees. In the coming time, the commune will continue to strengthen technical training, guide people to apply safe production processes, promote consumption links and build brands to enhance the value and competitiveness of Vu Quang oranges in the market.

Since 2023, Dong Loc Fruit Tree Cooperative (Dong Loc commune) has boldly converted more than 30 oranges to organic farming. This step has helped to "raise" the value of the cooperative's products, affirming its brand in the market. Thanks to that, the early season selling price for high-end oranges is from 60,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, and on holidays and near Tet, it can reach up to 150,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Thai - Director of the Cooperative said: "In order to sustainably develop orange trees, the Cooperative has used microbial fertilizers and biological products to improve the soil, supplement beneficial microorganisms, help trees develop healthy roots, absorb nutrients well and limit pests and diseases. Thanks to that, trees grow and develop healthily, and their ability to withstand external conditions is improved. In particular, oranges have outstanding quality, are juicy and have a rich sweet taste, with an estimated yield of more than 10 tons/ha".

In fact, the market is increasingly accepting high-quality cultivated orange products with clear traceability labels. Linking production and complying with quality management processes not only increases value but also creates trust for consumers so that they are willing to choose and stick with the product for a long time. This is also an inevitable direction to help the province's specialty fruit affirm its position and expand the market in the coming time.

Winning big at the 2025 Autumn Fair held at the Vietnam Exhibition Center ( Hanoi ), Ms. Le Thi Cam Van - Director of Thao Van Agricultural and Service Cooperative excitedly shared: "Customers are very impressed with Khe May orange products thanks to their outstanding quality and unique flavor, even though the selling price is higher than other orange lines. We pay special attention to "upgrading" the product, not only in the production stage but also in the promotion, communication strategy and expanding e-commerce channels to bring the Khe May orange brand closer to domestic and foreign consumers."

In recent years, Ha Tinh has identified citrus fruit trees (oranges, grapefruits) as advantageous products of the province. In recent periods, thanks to the focus on synchronous implementation of development orientations, most notably the work on varieties (selection, selection, propagation of disease-free and quality varieties), step-by-step transfer of intensive farming techniques to improve productivity, quality, and product uniformity associated with brand building and application of digital transformation in agricultural trade,...
Up to now, the orange area alone has reached 7,380 hectares, with an average yield of less than 100 tons/hectare in 2020, up to 110 tons/hectare in 2025. Many large-scale production areas have been formed, with famous brands and high product value, such as Khe May oranges, Thuong Loc crispy oranges, Vu Quang oranges, Huong Son pomelos, etc.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh said: "Despite many positive results, in some orange growing areas, people still do not pay attention to intensive investment. Some new planting areas do not use disease-free varieties with guaranteed origin and quality, leading to the risk of degradation, reduced productivity, fruit quality, affecting the value and brand of the product.
In the coming time, the Agriculture and Environment sector will focus on synchronously implementing many solutions such as: in-depth technical training, forming a team of professional farmers in fruit tree development; encouraging the use of disease-free varieties, applying organic farming, soil improvement, integrated pest management (IPM); increasing investment in intensive farming, improving productivity and fruit quality, and extending the exploitation period. Along with that, the sector will step up the construction, protection and promotion of brands of specialty fruit tree products to affirm their position and enhance competitiveness in the market."
