Ha Tinh is famous for its many specialty orange-growing regions such as Khe May oranges, Vu Quang oranges, and Thuong Loc oranges. The bold shift in cultivation areas towards improving quality and applying scientific and technological advancements has brought a bountiful harvest to farmers, with high and stable selling prices, opening up a sustainable development direction for this key local crop.

Doan Ngoc Bao's nearly 5-hectare orange farm has yielded approximately 50 tons of oranges, the highest production ever.
Thanks to the application of organic farming methods, this season, nearly 5 hectares of oranges belonging to Mr. Doan Ngoc Bao (village 1, Quang Tho, Vu Quang commune) yielded approximately 50 tons, the highest production ever.
Mr. Bao shared: “Growing oranges organically requires more effort and higher costs compared to conventional farming, but the fruit quality is better, and the distinctive flavor makes them popular with consumers. I also proactively promote the product on Facebook, Zalo, TikTok, and at large-scale trade fairs to reach diverse customer groups across the country. Currently, oranges sell for about 40,000 VND/kg, high-quality ones for 65,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, and the “premium” variety reaches 120,000 VND/kg, which has been very well received by the market.”

In recent years, Mr. Doan Quoc Hoai (village 1, Quang Tho, Vu Quang commune) has also focused on developing the production of organic oranges.
Mr. Hoai stated: “The cultivation process follows a ‘natural’ approach, using biological products from chili peppers, ginger, garlic, alcohol, and agricultural by-products such as straw mulch to retain moisture and create humus in the soil. Previously, yields were only about 15 tons/ha, but now they have increased to nearly 20 tons/ha. Customers are increasingly interested in high-quality oranges, so if we invest in the right direction and build a professional brand, the product can certainly establish itself and command a high price.”

Using "natural" methods ensures high crop yields, distinctive flavors, and environmental protection.

Reportedly, Vu Quang commune currently has nearly 700 hectares of orange groves, of which more than 610 hectares are producing fruit, with an estimated yield of about 7,100 tons per year. In recent years, the locality has paid special attention to sustainable farming, encouraging people to use bio-fertilizers and biological products to gradually replace chemical materials.
This approach not only helps improve the quality and design of the product but also protects the ecological environment, creating a stable and long-term foundation for the development of oranges. In the future, the commune will continue to strengthen technical training, guide people to apply safe production processes, promote consumption linkages and build brands to enhance the value and competitiveness of Vu Quang oranges in the market.

The selling price for premium Thuong Loc oranges at the beginning of the season ranges from 60,000 to 90,000 VND/kg, and during holidays and the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), it can reach over 150,000 VND/kg.
Since 2023, the Dong Loc Fruit Cooperative (Dong Loc commune) has boldly converted more than 30 orange orchards to organic farming. This step has helped "elevate" the value of the cooperative's products and affirm its brand in the market. As a result, the selling price of premium oranges at the beginning of the season reaches 60,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, and during holidays and the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), it can reach up to 150,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Thai, Director of the Cooperative, said: “In order to sustainably develop orange cultivation, the Cooperative has used bio-fertilizers and biological products to improve soil, supplement beneficial microorganisms, help the trees develop strong root systems, absorb nutrients well, and reduce pests and diseases. As a result, the trees grow and develop healthily, and their ability to withstand adverse external conditions is enhanced. In particular, the oranges have superior quality, are juicy and have a rich sweet taste, with an estimated yield of more than 10 tons/ha.”

Cam Thượng Lộc, a premium product from local orchards, is trusted by customers, and the number of orders is steadily increasing.
In reality, the market is increasingly receptive to high-quality, organically grown oranges with clear traceability labels. Production linkages and adherence to quality management processes not only enhance value but also build consumer trust, encouraging them to choose and remain loyal to the product in the long term. This is also the inevitable direction for this province's specialty fruit to assert its position and expand its market in the future.

E-commerce facilitates access for high-quality products to a wider range of customers across the country.
Having achieved great success at the 2025 Autumn Fair held at the Vietnam Exhibition Center ( Hanoi ), Ms. Le Thi Cam Van - Director of Thao Van Agricultural and Service Cooperative - excitedly shared: “Customers are very impressed with Khe May oranges thanks to their superior quality and distinctive flavor, even though the selling price is higher than other orange varieties. We are especially focused on "upgrading" the product, not only in the production process but also in the advertising, communication, and expansion of e-commerce channels to bring the Khe May orange brand closer to consumers both domestically and internationally.”

Numerous communication strategies have been implemented to bring Khe May oranges closer to consumers both domestically and internationally.

Strengthening the friendship between Vietnam and the United States. On July 3rd, as part of the Pacific Partnership - Friends of the Pacific 2026 program, the U.S. Army Pacific delegation, led by Lieutenant General Joel Vowell, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Pacific, paid a courtesy visit to the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command. Over the years, Ha Tinh province has identified citrus fruits (oranges, pomelos) as its advantageous products. In recent periods, thanks to the synchronized implementation of development orientations, most notably in seed selection (selection, breeding, disease-free and high-quality varieties), the gradual transfer of intensive farming techniques to improve productivity, quality, and product uniformity, coupled with brand building and the application of digital transformation in agricultural trade,...
To date, the area under orange cultivation alone has reached 7,380 hectares, with an average yield increasing from less than 100 quintals/hectare in 2020 to 110 quintals/hectare in 2025. Many large-scale production areas have been established, with well-known brands and high product value, such as Khe May oranges, Thuong Loc crispy oranges, Vu Quang oranges, and Huong Son pomelo oranges, etc.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment will continue to focus on implementing solutions to strengthen intensive farming investment, improve fruit productivity and quality, and extend the harvesting period.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh province, said: "Despite achieving many positive results, in some orange-growing areas, people still do not focus on intensive cultivation. Some newly planted areas do not use disease-free varieties with guaranteed origin and quality, leading to the risk of degradation, reduced yield and fruit quality, affecting the value and brand of the product."
In the coming period, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will focus on implementing a comprehensive set of solutions, including: providing in-depth technical training and forming a professional team of farmers in fruit tree development; encouraging the use of disease-free varieties, applying organic farming, soil improvement, and integrated pest management (IPM); increasing investment in intensive farming to improve productivity and fruit quality, and extending the harvesting period. Along with this, the sector will promote the development, protection, and promotion of brands for specialty fruit products to affirm their position and enhance competitiveness in the market.
