Jal Mahal Jaipur is a palace located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of Rajasthan state, India. It is also known as the “water palace” because of its exquisite architecture and splendid design that captivates visitors. It is the finest example of Rajput architecture and engineering excellence in the 18th century.

Built by King Maharaj Madho Singh, the structure was originally built simply as a resting place for him after duck hunting. During the 18th century, Madho’s son, Madho Singh II, decided to enhance the beauty of the building by adding a courtyard and changing the exterior.
This is a 5-storey building with the interesting thing that 4 out of the 5 floors are completely submerged under water, only the top floor is exposed above the surface. The reason why the water palace is flooded on the lower 4 floors is because this architectural work is built with red sandstone, a soft stone that is easily eroded by water.
Over time, the palace's structure gradually weakened and fell into disrepair. In addition, the construction of a dam on the Dharbawati River, the main source of water for the Man Sagar Lake, caused the lake's water level to rise, flooding the lower four floors of the palace, leaving only the top floor intact.

The architectural grandeur of the palace comes alive especially in the evening, when the entire complex is covered in lights.
The reflection of Jal Mahal in Man Sagar Lake creates an impressive illusion of towering floors above the water. Inside the palace, well-preserved hand-painted murals fill every hall and room, and the staircases and terraces are beautifully designed.
