Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Le Anh Tuan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, said that myopia has become an emerging public health problem, with predictions indicating that by 2050, half of the world's population (50%) will be myopic and 10% will have severe myopia. The rapid increase in the prevalence of myopia is attributed to urbanization, increased educational pressure, reduced outdoor activities and lifestyle changes associated with modernization.

In our country, myopia screening for primary school-age children has been conducted for many years, but has not achieved the expected results due to the lack of specific and clear guidelines. Since then, myopia experts, researchers and ophthalmologists at home and abroad have initiated the idea of implementing a consensus on myopia management to emphasize and analyze the challenges in myopia management, while incorporating better assessments from experts around the world and standardizing these assessments to develop a consensus guideline on myopia.

After many studies and two rounds of responses from 20 leading experts, the Consensus on Myopia Management in Vietnamese Children with 20 consensuses was recently presented at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital.

Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Le Anh Tuan hopes that through the National Consensus Conference on Myopia Control, there will be practical solutions aimed at reducing the burden of myopia in schools and building a healthy eye community.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Head of the Refractive Department of the High-Tech Eye Center of Tam Anh General Hospital, former Head of the Refractive Department of the Central Eye Hospital, raised the issue of using the word "control" instead of "management" in the name of the Consensus. According to her, "myopia management" includes everything from screening, treatment to monitoring progression. Meanwhile, many contents in the Consensus are leaning towards monitoring myopia progression, which is more suitable for the word "control".

Dr. Hoang Huu Khoi, Vice Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Danang University, a member of the group of 20 experts, explained that management is a very big issue. Basic myopia control such as posting eye charts and guiding eye exams has been carried out for the past 10 years, so the consensus in the draft aims to control myopia from progressing further. Myopia management in the name of the Consensus is the expectation of the drafting committee, "because school myopia management is not just a matter of the ophthalmology sector, but also related to the health sector, education sector and the whole society".

Dr. Tran Dinh Minh Huy, lecturer of the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine - University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, representing the professional board, also presented the plan to revise the Consensus after the Conference. Accordingly, the professional board will record comments from experts and submit a new draft to the steering committee and the peer review board. After the peer review results, the professional board will prepare the final draft and send it to the group of 20 consensus experts again to report at the National Ophthalmology Conference next November.

The expectation of the professional board after the Consensus is approved is to be able to conduct training of quality human resources including 200 doctors, bachelors and 40 certified centers, promoting the process of myopia control, towards the management of myopia in Vietnamese children in the future.
