Be careful with coffee of unknown origin

Currently, the demand for coffee seedlings in Dak Nong has increased sharply. However, authorities advise people to be careful with seedlings of unknown origin.

At the end of May, many households in Dak R'lap, Tuy Duc, Dak Mil districts... are busy preparing for the new planting season. In particular, coffee, the main crop in Dak Nong, continues to be chosen by people to replant or expand the area.

The price of coffee seedlings this year ranges from 6,000 to 12,000 VND/tree, depending on the variety and supply, an increase of about 20-30% compared to the same period last year, even many times higher than 3 years ago. At times, the price increased even more.

Mr. Mai Ngoc Son, Nhan Co commune, Dak R'lap district, who has 6 hectares of agricultural land, said: "I bought 800 trees to plant in my durian garden. This year, the lowest price is 6,500 VND/tree, the big ones are up to 12,000 VND/tree. With this amount of money, a few years ago, I could have bought 2-3 trees."

The price is high but the seedling market lacks strict control. Coffee seedlings are sold everywhere, from large dealers to small retail outlets on the roadside. Many households buy seedlings based on their feelings, just seeing that the plants are healthy, asking the seller a few questions and they are ready to buy without knowing the origin of the plants or whether they have inspection papers or not.

A coffee nurseryman revealed that the total cost of producing a coffee seedling is currently under 3,000 VND. The nurseryman sells the tree for 5,000 VND after 6 months of care and has made a profit.

However, due to the sharp increase in coffee bean prices in 2024, the strong demand has caused many establishments to rush into mass production, even using seeds of unknown origin and improper preservation. Worryingly, there are cases where seeds are purchased from abroad, roughly classified, and then "labeled" as famous varieties such as TR4, TRS1... for easy sale.

Such seedlings, although they seem to grow well at first, later have low productivity and unsatisfactory fruit quality, only yielding 2-3 tons/ha, forcing people to destroy them after a few years.

With 20 years of experience, Mr. Tran Binh, Director of Tran Binh Seedlings Company Limited, Nghia Phu Ward, Gia Nghia City, shared: “To produce standard coffee, we have to go to the Eakmat Tay Nguyen Institute in Dak Lak to buy carefully preserved seeds and then grow them ourselves. Up to now, we have grown 80,000 trees and sold them all according to orders. Although customers still want to buy more, we do not dare to buy and resell seedlings from outside.”

In fact, the authorities have issued many warnings, but there are still many loopholes in the management of seedlings. According to experts, people need to change their mindset when choosing seedlings. Farmers should buy from licensed establishments with clear quality inspection certificates.

In addition, local authorities should organize groups of farmers to buy seeds collectively, both to ensure quality and to reduce costs; at the same time, the agricultural sector needs to strengthen inspection and examination of seed production and trading establishments. Fraudulent businesses need to be strictly handled.

In the long term, the province needs to have policies to encourage businesses to invest in producing high-quality varieties, expanding scale and improving technical standards. This ensures sustainable development for the coffee industry and contributes to protecting long-term livelihoods for farmers.
