There are various reasons why users need to pay attention to noise-canceling headphones when wearing them outside to avoid unnecessary costly incidents.
Poor dust and water resistance
Most noise-canceling headphones, from the Bose QuietComfort Ultra to the Sony WH-1000XM5 to the AirPods Max, are not water- and dust-resistant. Using them in adverse weather conditions like rain or snow can lead to serious damage. While some people claim to have used their headphones in the rain without any problems, the reality is that internal corrosion may not be detected until it’s too late.

To be considered water or dust resistant, electronic devices must undergo testing and receive an IP rating, with numbers indicating different levels of protection. For example, many headphones are rated IPX4, which means they are not dust-proof and are only splash-proof. Meanwhile, headphones rated IP68 are completely water and dust resistant.
If you take your noise-canceling headphones outside in bad weather or on dusty terrain, you are putting them at high risk of damage. Weather conditions can change unexpectedly and accidents can happen at any time. Not having an IP rating means that the headphones are not fully protected from the elements, which puts them at risk of water and dust getting inside, causing build-up and corrosion, and can even lead to short circuits and permanent damage.
Headphone repairs can be expensive, especially when they break due to easily preventable mistakes. Noise-canceling headphones vary widely in price, with many popular models costing from over 5 million VND to over 10 million VND. Repair costs for these can be quite high if you’re not careful.

Choosing headphones when going out
If you plan on using your headphones outdoors, choose a model that’s water-resistant. Many current models, including budget ones, are rated IPX4 or higher, which protects the internal components from water. Those who’ve used AirPods Pro know that their IPX4 rating is a big plus.
Finding waterproof over-ear headphones, however, is more difficult. In our research, we found only a few options, like the Jabra Elite 85h, which are designed for workouts and have a water-resistant coating, but no official IP rating. Another option is the Bose Noise Canceling Headphones 700, which are a bit dated but have an IPX4 rating. The lack of waterproof over-ear headphones may be due to technological limitations.
Suitable places to use noise cancelling headphones
Based on experience, noise-canceling headphones should be used primarily indoors. This minimizes the risk of damage and replacement costs. Homes and offices are ideal places to use these types of headphones.

Users can also wear them in public places such as planes, trains or buses, but need to be careful and control the surrounding elements. Always carry a protective case or bag to avoid water damage when not in use.
If you decide to wear noise-canceling headphones outside, remember that it comes with risks. While many people use headphones in the rain without any problems, it’s still wise to be cautious with expensive audio equipment.
