OpenAI Releases GPT-4.1 Chat Version, a Huge Step Forward in Performance

This version is introduced as faster, smarter and has superior context handling capabilities thanks to a significantly expanded "context window", promising to bring a noticeable performance boost to users.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, GPT-4.1 is now available to all users of ChatGPT’s paid plans, which is considered an important step in improving the service for both professionals and regular individual users.

For free account users, OpenAI says there will be a wait, but the company has pledged to gradually roll out access to GPT-4.1 to itseducational and enterprise customers in the coming weeks.

One of the most notable improvements of GPT-4.1 over its predecessors is its ability to handle a much larger context window, up to one million tokens (information processing units).

This allows the model to receive and process large amounts of input information including text, videos , and images, outperforming GPT-4o, which has a limit of 128,000 tokens.

This upgrade opens up the potential for deeper, more complex interactions and is especially useful for developers and professional applications that require extensive contextual analysis.

OpenAI also notes that GPT-4.1 is faster, especially on coding-related tasks, and that it outperforms previous models like GPT-4o mini (and possibly the “o3” and “o4-mini” versions mentioned above).

More importantly, these improvements do not affect the model's response quality.

At the same time, GPT-4o mini - a lightweight and economical version launched in 2024 - is also being replaced by a new version, GPT-4.1 mini.

Notably, GPT-4.1 mini will be the default option even for free account users, demonstrating OpenAI’s strategy to improve performance and experience for a broader user community.

However, the GPT-4.1 Nano model, which is known to be OpenAI's fastest and lightest version, is not currently deployed in this update. The possibility of integrating GPT-4.1 Nano into ChatGPT in the future has not been confirmed by OpenAI.

To experience, ChatGPT users (with subscription to the corresponding packages) can consider activating GPT-4.1 by selecting the "Add model" option in the application's settings interface.
