Scammers impersonating electricity company employees, forging documents, using fake brands, and creating fake websites impersonating the Vietnam Electricity Group are some of the fraudulent schemes that the Electricity Group is informing customers about to raise awareness.

Recently, the province has recorded cases of people being scammed by individuals impersonating electricity company employees via phone calls, causing panic and significant economic losses, as well as damaging the reputation of the electricity industry.

Speaking with us, Mr. Phung The Gioi , Director of Thanh Ba Power Company, said: “Based on feedback from residents, we have recorded several cases in Thanh Ba district where individuals impersonating power company employees have called households, informing them that their electricity will be cut off due to unpaid bills. To gain more credibility, if residents confirm they have paid, the individuals will impersonate the “technical department” to call back and request personal information. They will then direct residents to access fake links or applications with interfaces similar to the official website of the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). However, accessing these fake websites or apps can lead to the theft of bank accounts or personal information.”

According to information from Thanh Ba Power Company, many customers reported using the automatic debit service from their banks to pay their electricity bills monthly, but recently they have been frequently receiving calls and messages requesting them to add them on Zalo and provide payment information. After receiving these calls to verify the information, Thanh Ba Power Company confirmed that the calls were fraudulent. They also advised that all electricity bill payments are conducted through the official channels of Phu Tho Power Company and that personal accounts are absolutely not used for payment collection. Power company employees strictly adhere to customer service regulations when interacting with customers, and do not engage in threatening or impolite behavior, nor do they instruct customers to click on links to pay their electricity bills.

Besides the aforementioned scams, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has also received complaints from customers in many other localities regarding various fraudulent methods. Customers receive calls from unknown numbers requesting electricity bills to confirm information about "adjustments to electricity bills" due to calculation errors. Scammers impersonating power company employees call, promising a 10-15% refund on electricity bills as a "customer appreciation" gesture. Customers are then asked to add them on Zalo and send their electricity bill information, access suspicious links, or install fake applications. This is one of the widespread scams causing significant inconvenience and losses to customers. Most recently, the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) has warned about the counterfeiting of the brand and seal of the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). Specifically, this forged document contains instructions for customers on how to "make cashless payments from October 2024." Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) affirms that neither the Group nor its member units have any entity named "Northern Electricity Group." EVN advises customers to absolutely not follow the instructions in this forged document, to avoid allowing fraudsters to steal personal information and profit from it, causing harm to customers and damaging the Group's reputation.

To prevent fraud, Phu Tho Power Company (EVNNPC) urges people to be vigilant against such schemes and not to pay electricity bills to bank accounts, suspicious links, or unverified personal accounts. For any questions about electricity or related services, people can contact the EVNNPC Customer Service Hotline directly or visit the EVNNPC Customer Service Center website. Alternatively, customers can pay electricity bills through banks or reputable e-wallets linked with EVN such as Momo, Zalopay, Viettel Money, VNPT Money, VNpay, etc.

In the context of increasing fraud, every citizen needs to raise their awareness, refrain from sharing sensitive information, and take preventive measures. When encountering suspected fraud cases, citizens should promptly report them to the police to prevent and handle them according to the law. Authorities encourage citizens to proactively check and verify all information related to electricity through official channels of the electricity sector, avoiding falling into the traps of sophisticated fraudsters.
