Police in Rotterdam said more than 100 cars and other vehicles were set on fire there. Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, The Hague and other cities, riot squads were called in to disperse violent crowds.
Riot squads were also deployed across the Netherlands to assist fire crews who were attacked with fireworks as they tried to extinguish several fires. In the city of Haarlem, a 19-year-old man died from injuries sustained during a fireworks display on New Year's Eve 2024.
In addition to the Netherlands, many other European countries have also had to deal with the risk of violence and terrorism during Christmas and New Year. Also on New Year's Eve 2024, German police arrested three suspects who were believed to be plotting a terrorist attack on Cologne Cathedral.
Earlier, on Christmas Day 2023, Austrian police arrested three people on suspicion of being involved in an “Islamist network”. The suspects were said to be planning attacks for the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) terrorist group, an IS affiliate in Afghanistan.
