The attacker was wounded in the leg and received medical treatment but was not in a critical condition, a police spokesman said.
“The man tried to light a Molotov cocktail and approached several people including several police officers, and the officers had to use firearms to subdue him,” said Sandra Levgruen, a spokeswoman for the Hamburg police force.
In a press release, the police force said the perpetrator, a 39-year-old German man, may have acted out of anger after leaving a bar with the weapons. The investigation is still ongoing.

Levgruen said there was no evidence the man was connected to the tournament and the motive for the attack was still unclear.
The incident happened in the St Pauli district of Hamburg just before the afternoon football match between Poland and the Netherlands at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion.
Fan parades were planned for the time slots before Euro 2024 football matches, and the Dutch fan parade was about to end when the incident occurred. Fans were directed away from the area by police.
Germany is hosting the month-long tournament that began last Friday night.
