On April 14, information from Da Nang Hospital said that doctors from the Thoracic Surgery Department had successfully performed endoscopic surgery to remove an isolated lung mass for a 57-year-old male patient. This is a rare congenital disease, accounting for 0.1% of congenital lung lesions.
Previously, patient NTK (residing in Hoa Tho Dong ward, Cam Le district, Da Nang city) went for a general health check-up and discovered damage to the lower lobe of the left lung.
Chest CT scan showing thoracic vascular reconstruction showed a lesion located in the lower lobe of the left lung, measuring 32 x 45 mm, with blood vessels supplying directly from the thoracic aorta with a diameter of about 11 mm and venous blood draining directly into the left lower pulmonary vein.

Doctors of the Department of Thoracic Surgery performed surgery to remove an isolated part of the lung using the 2-port thoracoscopy technique, helping to minimize chest wall trauma for the patient.
After 2 hours, the doctors successfully removed the isolated lung mass and part of the parenchyma of the left lung lobe, preserving as much of the remaining lung parenchyma of the lower lobe as possible instead of removing an entire lobe.
Specialist Doctor Than Trong Vu, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery (Da Nang Hospital), who directly performed the surgery on the patient, said that because the isolated pulmonary artery is large and the patient is old, the risk of brittle artery walls and increased risk of bleeding requires absolute caution.
"Thanks to the meticulousness and good coordination of the surgical team, the doctors successfully removed the isolated lung mass, preserving maximum lower lobe lung tissue. Currently, the patient's health is stable and he is preparing to be discharged from the hospital," said Dr. Vu.

According to Dr. Vu, pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital condition, diagnosed in infancy. In adults, pulmonary sequestration is rarely diagnosed.
The progression of isolated lung can lead to recurrent pneumonia, lung abscess, cancer, severe bleeding that threatens the patient's life, heart failure due to increased cardiac output...
Doctor Vu recommends that the case of congenital isolated lung of patient NTK shows the important role of regular health check-ups, thereby helping to detect potential congenital abnormalities for early diagnosis and treatment to avoid possible complications.
