A player in England was red carded for going to the toilet in the wrong place. |
The incident took place during the 2-2 draw between Northwood FC and Welwyn Garden City in the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central, part of the semi-professional English system on November 9. The controversial moment came when Manny Folarin, captain of Northwood, was unexpectedly shown a straight red card by the referee.
While Northwood FC claimed that their player "left the field without permission during a stoppage in play to receive treatment for an injury", opponents Welwyn had a more difficult explanation: "Player No. 4 was sent off for going to the toilet in the corner of the field".
Folarin was reportedly sent off around three minutes into the second half, and his actions "went largely unnoticed from the stands". Folarin has not commented on the incident.
The match ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw. The draw left both teams unsatisfied. Welwyn were in mid-table with 22 points from 15 games, while Northwood had just 10 points from 14 games, deep in the relegation zone and on a four-game winless streak.
However, what people talked about most after the match was not the score, but the strangest red card of the season. There, a player was sent off for going to the toilet in the wrong place. "A tragicomedy of the type that only happens in English football," wrote The Sun.
