UEFA has just announced a major rule change. And it opens up hope for stars left out of their clubs' 25-man Champions League squads.

Last week, when the five Premier League clubs announced their Champions League registration lists, there were quite a few big names left out.

Notably, Tottenham Hotspur's Mathys Tel. Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus and Liverpool hero Federico Chiesa are also absent from coach Arne Slot's plans.

The decisions mean the aforementioned stars will not be able to feature in their teams' Champions League campaigns until the knock-out stages after the Christmas break.

However, now thanks to a rule change from UEFA, things could be different.

In a surprise move, European football's governing body announced that clubs will be allowed to register a temporary replacement if one of their non-goalkeepers is injured or has a long-term illness.

This rule will be in effect until the 6th match of the group stage.

"The reason for this adjustment is to ensure that teams' playing lists are not unfairly reduced and that players are protected from pressure due to the workload," UEFA said in a statement.

In addition, UEFA also postponed the decision on allowing European national championship matches to be held abroad, in the context of La Liga proposing to organize the match between Barca and Villarreal in December in Miami, USA.
