Two turning points of Man United and Liverpool

A clear contrast between the two members of the "Big Six" group is gradually emerging, as Man United steps out of the spiral while Liverpool sinks deeper into difficulties.

Manchester United fans have probably never been as thrilled as they are now, witnessing their beloved team displaying disciplined collective play and consistently achieving positive results after a long period of enduring much controversy. Meanwhile, reigning champions Liverpool have clearly shown signs of decline after the ninth round of the Premier League, not only failing to escape the downward spiral but sinking deeper into weakness.

The new look of Man United

Facing an opponent often considered a "nemesis" (Brighton had won 6 of their last 7 Premier League encounters with the "Red Devils," and before their trip to Old Trafford, they had an unbeaten run of 5 consecutive matches), Man United won in an emotional game. They controlled almost the entire match, of course not counting the moments when the "Seagulls" fought back to narrow the gap.

Casemiro, along with new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, scored consecutive goals to give Manchester United a 3-0 lead after just 60 minutes. This is something the "Red Devils" haven't been able to do against their opponents for a very long time, at least not in the last 12 months – since Ruben Amorim took over the team.

A positive atmosphere is gradually emerging at Old Trafford, a stark contrast to the gloom that enveloped Manchester United a few weeks ago. No one is discussing anymore the need for Ruben Amorim to change the 3-4-3 formation. Manchester United have made subtle adjustments and are no longer stuck with the constant long ball tactics, although they maintain a more direct style of play than before. Having previously struggled in attack, Manchester United have now found ways to approach the opponent's half more quickly and easily.

Brighton narrowed the scoreline with two consecutive goals at the end of the match, but Man United still won, also by a two-goal margin. This "scenario" clearly demonstrates two things. Firstly, Man United possesses sharp attacking capabilities and also has the attacking depth to score many goals despite being in a rebuilding phase. Secondly, their inherent weakness was exposed: Man United nearly shot themselves in the foot with a lack of concentration in the final 20 minutes, even though their ability to maintain the lead had significantly improved.

Nevertheless, the positive aspect is that Man United is building momentum in terms of morale, cohesion between the lines, and the ability to convert chances in attack. These are the elements that form the foundation for a potentially sustainable resurgence if maintained.

Gloomy Liverpool

Meanwhile, Liverpool left Gtech Community Stadium with a 2-3 defeat against Brentford. This loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League, and also extended their losing streak to five consecutive away games in London.

Liverpool's problem now isn't just about one or a few players or tactical systems; their decline stems from following the same path as Manchester City last season. What is Liverpool facing? Experts point to numerous reasons for their current situation: from Salah and Van Dijk's loss of form (especially after their contract extensions), to Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure, Ibrahima Konate's uncertain future, and Alexis MacAllister's inexplicable decline…

Furthermore, it's worth mentioning the new signings, who, despite their quality and high cost, haven't been enough to transform Liverpool's playing style. Coach Arne Slot is determined to use Mohamed Salah, who is seriously out of form, and insists on not following the trend of playing long balls and relying on set pieces.

All of this has led to a decline in the current Liverpool squad, which has strayed far from the image they once strongly built under manager Jurgen Klopp. When an ambitious team like Liverpool cannot maintain consistency in defense and converting chances, and loses its identity, poor results like the defeat against Brentford are likely to repeat, making the title race seem increasingly distant.

The Premier League is a long race, and a few good or bad rounds don't determine a team's fate for the entire season. However, after round 9, the message to fans is clear: Manchester United have reason to be optimistic as their collective play is improving and confidence is returning. Conversely, Liverpool need urgent action to halt their decline before things become irreversible.
