Entering the quarter-final matches of the badminton event at the SEA Games 33 on the afternoon of December 12th, Vu Thi Trang and Bui Bich Phuong, a women's doubles pair considered a "makeshift" team with the 18-year-old young player partnering with a more experienced senior player, were the last two representatives of Vietnamese badminton remaining.
Facing the young Filipino pair Mary Destiny Untal and Andrea Princess Hernandez, Trang and Phuong got off to a slow start. After a back-and-forth battle for the first five points, the two Vietnamese players gradually took control, leading 11-6 and then pulling ahead to 15-7 and 20-9. Despite allowing their opponents to save two match points, the Vietnamese duo still closed out the first set with a score of 21-11.

In the second set, with their spirits high, Trang and Phuong completely dominated, giving their opponents few opportunities and winning quickly 21-10. From the first round to this afternoon's match, Bich Phuong's strategy of preserving her youthful energy and Vu Thi Trang's experience created a surprise for Vietnam.
Earlier, the badminton event at the 33rd SEA Games witnessed a major upset by this "makeshift" Vietnamese women's doubles pair when they unexpectedly defeated the host nation Thailand pair, ranked 48th in the world and seeded number 3, in the first round.
With their quarterfinal victory, Trang and Phuong advanced to the semi-finals, securing a medal for Vietnamese badminton.
In the other bracket, their opponents also caused an upset by eliminating the Malaysian women's doubles pair, who were ranked 22nd in the world.
Indonesian players Meilysa Trias Puspitasari and Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma will be Trang and Phuong's opponents tomorrow afternoon, December 13th.
