On the evening of December 12th, the Youth World Theatre held a rehearsal of the play "A Million Dollar Birthday," a new production imbued with contemporary issues, continuing the familiar creative tradition of this theatre: using pressing social issues as dramatic material to reflect on the human condition today.
The play by author Nguyen Huu Tien was originally titled "Run Away Immediately," directed by Tien Luat, with stage design by People's Artist Doan Bang.
The play "Million Dollar Birthday" brings together a cast of experienced actors who appeal to young audiences: Tieu Bao Quoc, Thu Trang, Tien Luat, Quang Tuan, Kha Nhu, Huynh Phuong, Thuan Nguyen, Ba Nam, Thanh Huy…. Each actor brings their own unique style and personality, together creating a vibrant and diverse theatrical tableau.

Greed – the underlying current of family tragedy
Set against the backdrop of what appears to be a happy and fulfilling birthday, the story quickly reveals the dark underbelly of human psychology. Greed, when crossed by ethical boundaries, not only leads to personal mistakes but also becomes the driving force behind fractured family relationships, betrayed trust, and the imminent collapse of happiness.
What's noteworthy about "A Million Dollar Birthday" is its straightforward message, avoiding one-sided moral judgments. Greed in the play isn't presented as an "absolute sin," but rather within very real-life contexts: the pressure of making a living, the desire for a better life, the fear of being left behind in the materialistic world. It is this very "humanity" that makes the tragedy so convincing and relatable.

The tragicomic situations in the play "Million Dollar Birthday" are very captivating.
Drama intertwines, with laughter and moments of silence.
The play is structured with a fast pace, constantly interwoven dramatic situations, creating compelling conflict. The charming comedic elements, a familiar strength of the Youth World Theatre, are used judiciously, allowing the audience to relax without detracting from the main theme.
After the laughter come necessary moments of silence, where the characters confront themselves and the choices that have pushed them further and further away from their family homes. The actors' performances demonstrate chemistry and restraint. Tieu Bao Quoc brings depth of experience, while Thu Trang, Tien Luat, Kha Nhu, Quang Tuan, Thuan Nguyen, and Huynh Phuong create characters with distinct psychological nuances, evolving logically with the story's progression.
Each character, whether main or supporting, contributes to highlighting the central message: knowing when to stop is the key to preserving happiness.

The actors received praise from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports' Arts Council for their performance in the play "Million Dollar Birthday".
News and current affairs stage – a consistent choice for Youth World.
"The Million Dollar Birthday" once again affirms the long-standing direction of the Youth World Theatre: closely following current events and reflecting issues that the public is concerned about.
From family stories, money, and life values to the temptations of modern society, the play shows that spoken drama still has the ability to engage in direct dialogue with life, if the right material and storytelling techniques are chosen.
Beyond entertainment, the play "Million Dollar Birthday" prompts audiences to reflect on the limits of personal ambition, where people need to be mindful so as not to compromise the most enduring values: family bonds and happiness.
With its approachable style, engaging rhythm, and clear message, the performance promises to continue attracting large audiences to the Youth World Theatre during the New Year celebrations.
