The U22 Indonesian team (right) disappointed at the 33rd SEA Games. |
On the evening of December 12th, the U22 Indonesia and U22 Myanmar teams faced off in a crucial match, both aiming for a resounding victory to keep their hopes alive of securing the best second-place spot in the SEA Games 33 semi-finals. With Malaysia holding the advantage, both teams had no choice but to play offensively from the start.
U22 Indonesia pressed from the start, constantly threatening with powerful throw-ins into the penalty area – their familiar weapon. However, U22 Myanmar defended disciplinedly, maintaining good spacing and waiting for opportunities to counter-attack. In the 30th minute, from a rare attacking move, Min Maw Oo created a moment of brilliance with a beautiful curling shot from outside the penalty area, opening the scoring for Myanmar and exposing the looseness of the Indonesian defense.
After conceding a goal, Indonesia intensified their attack but struggled to find the net. It wasn't until the 45th minute that they equalized thanks to an unbelievable mistake by the Myanmar goalkeeper, allowing Tony to easily tap the ball in from inside the penalty area.
In the second half, Indonesia continued to exert strong pressure, exploiting aerial balls and chaotic situations in front of the opponent's goal. However, impatience led to inaccurate final shots, while Myanmar remained resilient in their defense.
Attacking relentlessly throughout the second half, U22 Indonesia were rewarded with two goals in the 89th and 90+6th minutes, both scored by Jens Raven. At this point, U22 Indonesia needed one more goal to advance. However, there was too little time left.
Despite winning against U22 Myanmar with a final score of 3-1 and having the same goal difference of +1 as U22 Malaysia in Group B, U22 Indonesia was still eliminated because they scored fewer goals than their opponent (3 compared to 4).
Thus, the four teams that advanced to the semi-finals of the 33rd SEA Games this year are U22 Vietnam, U22 Thailand, U22 Philippines, and U22 Malaysia. U22 Vietnam will face U22 Philippines, while Thailand will clash with U22 Malaysia.
