On June 15, Tay Ninh Online Newspaper published an article: “Bien Gioi Commune, Chau Thanh District: People are upset about environmental pollution from dumping of spoiled fruit”. After the article was published, local authorities stepped in to inspect and verify the situation, and at the same time, requested the owner of the facility to handle and remedy the environmental pollution.
Mr. Tran Quoc Thai - civil servant of Land Administration - Construction and Environment of Bien Gioi commune said, through verification, the origin of the spoiled fruit, the fruit peel after processing is decomposing in the dirt tunnel along the border patrol road that Tay Ninh Online Newspaper reported is from the business household Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh (intersection of Station 839, Ben Cau hamlet, Bien Gioi commune), brought there to dump illegally.
Immediately after receiving the information, the Commune People's Committee coordinated with the Commune Police and the Hamlet Management Board to go to the scene to inspect and make a record of the incident. At the same time, the Commune People's Committee also requested Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh's household to immediately stop dumping fruit waste into Ms. Le Thi Nu's underground cellar.
According to the reporter's records, on the morning of June 17, in the area inside Ms. Nu's soil mining tunnel, there were about 6 people (including Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh and Mr. Nguyen Trong Nhan - Ms. Linh's younger brother) and an excavator carrying out the treatment by spreading lime and digging up the soil to bury the fruit peels.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Nhan, representative of this fruit processing facility, said that for more than 2 months now, his family has been purchasing fruits (mainly mangoes) in the area to process, intentionally taking the flesh, leaving the skin and seeds to bring to the empty land area in Ms. Le Thi Nu's soil mining pit to dispose of.
According to Mr. Nhan, in the past, every few days, the facility would send people to handle the problem by burning it on the spot. However, due to the recent heavy rains in the area, it was impossible to burn it, causing a foul smell and water pollution, as the decomposing fruit peels leaked into the surrounding area.
“After the Commune People's Committee invited us to work, my family mobilized machinery and workers to handle the fruit peel collection site by spreading lime and burying it in the ground, which is expected to be completed in about 3 days. We also committed to the commune that we would register with the garbage collection unit to handle the post-production waste, not to throw it away indiscriminately, causing environmental pollution.”
According to many local residents, after reporters came to record the pollution at the soil mining pit next to the border patrol route on June 12, the next day, people from Bien Gioi commune came to inspect. By the morning of June 16, a dirt excavator and nearly 10 people from the fruit processing facility came to handle the pile of fruit peels and seeds in the soil mining pit. Currently, this unit is still burying the pile of rotten fruit.
According to Mr. Tran Quoc Thai - civil servant of Land - Construction and Environment of Bien Gioi commune, the People's Committee of the commune invited the business household Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh to sign a commitment to sign a contract with a waste collection unit, transport all waste during the production process, not to throw fruit peels or damaged fruits into the environment; at the same time, required Ms. Linh's household to complete the pollution remediation as committed. The local government affirmed that it will closely monitor and not let similar situations recur.
“We will closely monitor the progress of the treatment. By June 23, the unit must complete the remediation of the pollution in this area according to the signed commitment,” Mr. Thai added.
Regarding long-term solutions, Mr. Thai said that the commune will continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to strengthen inspection and supervision, while promoting propaganda to households and production and business establishments in the area about their responsibility to protect the environment. The local government will resolutely handle violations to avoid similar situations from happening again in the future.
