After being closed, the landfill in Phan Vang village, Tuan Viet commune was handed over to local people to plant trees, take care of them, and manage them, and it has brought in income.

The landfill is located in Quynh Khe 2 village, Kim Xuyen commune, with an area of about 600 m². This landfill is located right next to WB2 road, bordering Ngu Phuc commune. Before 2022, this was one of the seriously polluted spots due to frequent overload, with waste spilling onto the road, affecting the living environment of people in the two communes.

Since 2022, the landfill has been closed, and people's household waste has been collected and transported to the waste treatment plant in Thanh Ha district. Immediately after the landfill was closed, Kim Xuyen commune assigned Quynh Khe 2 village to organize tree planting in the entire area. The village has chosen to plant rows of purple evening primrose trees along WB2 road, combined with shade trees such as si, sanh...

Mr. Pham Viet Bao, a resident of Quynh Khe 2 village, who lives near the landfill, said that since the landfill was closed and trees were planted, the living environment has improved significantly. People around the area are very excited.

Kim Xuyen Commune has 4 landfills with an area of about 3,000 m². From 2016 to 2022, all landfills were closed and covered with trees. All previous landfills were overloaded, with garbage piled up higher than a person's head, seriously affecting people's lives. After the closure, the commune directed the villages to level, cover the land and plant trees.

Tuan Viet Commune is one of the localities that has been early to close landfills. Since 2017, landfills here have been leveled, filled with soil, planted with trees and assigned to local people for management and care. The allocation of land to local people has brought about clear results, as each family chooses to plant trees that are suitable to the soil characteristics and bring in income.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung in Phan Vang village said that in 2018, his family was assigned more than 400 square meters of land that used to be the village's landfill and converted it to grow bamboo shoots and sour plums for fruit. After two years, the bamboo and sour plums began to yield. On average, each year, his family harvested about 1 ton of bamboo shoots and 200 quintals of sour plums, earning a profit of over 10 million VND.

Mr. Ninh Van Khanh, Chairman of Tuan Viet Commune People's Committee, said that the whole commune had 8 landfills. After being closed, all of them were covered with green. The people assigned to manage them have used the land to grow plants such as bananas, cassava, bamboo shoots... to improve the landscape and bring in income.

The centralized landfill in Quynh Khe 2 village, Kim Xuyen commune, located right next to WB2 road, after being closed, has been covered with many types of trees.

Kim Thanh district currently has 38 landfills. Of these, only 9 are built according to technical standards; the remaining 29 do not have a waterproof layer or ventilation pipes, potentially causing environmental pollution. To date, over 95% of the landfills in the district have been closed, and measures have been taken to renovate and plant trees. However, the district still has 1 landfill in Quang Binh village, Dong Cam commune that is overloaded but has not yet been transported to the treatment plant.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kim Thanh district, after closing the landfill, communes and towns not only planted trees but also turned these areas into areas for growing fruit trees or timber trees for economic value. Every year, on the occasion of Tet tree planting, localities allocate budgets to plant additional trees in landfill areas. In 2025 alone, about 10,000 trees were planted in these areas.

Currently, Kim Thanh district still has a landfill in Quang Binh village, Dong Cam commune that is overloaded but the garbage has not been transported to the treatment plant.

The care and monitoring of tree growth is assigned to villages and local associations and organizations. Propaganda and mobilization work to encourage people to participate in protecting trees at landfills is also focused on.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Chairman of Ngu Phuc Commune People's Committee, said: "Every year, the commune spends a part of its budget to plant and take care of trees, including trees in landfill areas. Currently, 100% of the commune's landfills have been closed and covered with greenery, contributing significantly to improving the local living environment."

Closing the landfill and planting trees in Kim Thanh district recently not only contributed to reducing environmental pollution but also brought income to the people.
