The centralized landfill in Quynh Khe 2 village, Kim Xuyen commune, covers an area of approximately 600 m². This landfill is located right next to the WB2 road, bordering Ngu Phuc commune. Before 2022, this was one of the most seriously polluted areas due to frequent overloading, with waste overflowing onto the road, affecting the living environment of residents in both communes.
Since 2022, the landfill has been closed, and household waste is collected and transported to a waste treatment plant in Thanh Ha district. Immediately after the landfill closed, Kim Xuyen commune assigned Quynh Khe 2 village to organize tree planting throughout the entire area. The village chose to plant rows of crape myrtle trees along WB2 road, combined with shade trees such as fig and banyan.
Mr. Pham Viet Bao, a resident of Quynh Khe 2 village living near the landfill, said that since the landfill was closed and trees were planted, the living environment has improved significantly. The people in the area are very pleased.
Kim Xuyen commune has four landfills covering an area of approximately 3,000 m². From 2016 to 2022, all landfills were closed and reforested. Previously, all landfills were overloaded, with garbage piled higher than a person's head, seriously affecting the lives of the people. After closing, the commune directed the villages to level the land, cover it with soil, and plant trees.
Tuan Viet commune is one of the first localities to implement the closure of landfills. Since 2017, the landfills here have been leveled, filled with soil, planted with trees, and leased to local residents for management and care. The land allocation to residents has yielded clear results, with each family choosing to plant crops suitable to their soil characteristics and generating income.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung from Phan Vang village said that in 2018, his family received a lease for over 400 square meters of land, formerly a village landfill, and renovated it to plant bamboo for shoots and sour plums for fruit. After two years, the bamboo and sour plums began to yield harvests. On average, his family harvests about 1 ton of bamboo shoots and 200 kg of sour plums annually, earning a profit of over 10 million VND.
Mr. Ninh Van Khanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuan Viet commune, said that the entire commune has 8 landfills. After being closed, all of them have been reforested. The people assigned to manage them have utilized the land to plant trees such as bananas, cassava, and bamboo for shoots... both improving the landscape and generating income.

Kim Thanh district currently has 38 landfills. Of these, only 9 have been constructed according to technical standards; the remaining 29 lack waterproofing and ventilation systems, posing a potential risk of environmental pollution. To date, over 95% of the landfills in the district have been closed, and measures have been implemented to improve their condition and plant trees. However, the district still has one landfill in Quang Binh village, Dong Cam commune, which is overloaded but has not yet had its waste transported to the treatment plant.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kim Thanh District, after the landfill was closed, the communes and towns not only planted trees but also transformed these areas into fruit or timber plantations for economic value. Every year, during the Tree Planting Festival, localities allocate budgets to plant additional trees in the landfill areas. In 2025 alone, approximately 10,000 trees were planted in these areas.

The care and monitoring of tree growth are assigned to local villages and associations. Emphasis is also placed on raising awareness and encouraging people to participate in protecting trees at landfill sites.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngu Phuc commune, said: "Every year, the commune allocates a portion of its budget to planting and caring for trees, including trees in landfill areas. Currently, 100% of the commune's landfills have been closed and reforested, significantly contributing to improving the local living environment."
Closing landfills and planting trees in Kim Thanh district in recent times has not only contributed to reducing environmental pollution but also brought income to the local people.
