According to information from the Agricultural Service Center of Cao Loc district, from May 6, bamboo locusts appeared in Ban Don village, Cao Lau commune and Tau Lin village, Xuat Le commune with a density of 0.5 - 0.7 locusts/m2 on corn plants, the density at the banks and bushes is 5 - 10 locusts/bush on average, 20 - 30 locusts/bush on high, the area appearing at the banks of bushes is 0.2 ha. Bamboo locusts are in the 1st - 2nd instar stage.
According to Mr. To Van Vi, Ban Don village, Cao Lau commune, in early May 2025, while visiting the fields and taking care of corn, his family discovered that bamboo locusts appeared at a small density. Faced with this reality, the family reported to the local authorities and was instructed by the commune's professional staff to buy pesticides to prevent it. At this time, his family continued to visit the fields and clear the bushes to eliminate the habitat and breeding grounds of bamboo locusts, preventing this type of creature from developing and harming crops.
Mr. Vi Van Dong, Vice Chairman of Cao Lau Commune People's Committee, said: To promptly prevent bamboo locusts and avoid spreading widely, the commune has coordinated with the District Agricultural Service Center (TTDVNN) to conduct inspections, instruct households to proactively buy pesticides and visit fields regularly. At the same time, the commune also assigned officials in charge of the villages to increase inspections twice a week, step up propaganda through loudspeakers and zalo groups of the village so that people can understand the process and effective prevention measures.
Similar to Cao Loc district, bamboo locusts are also emerging in Van Lang district. Mr. Nong Hong Bo, Director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development of Van Lang district, said: Through investigation from May 7 to May 13, the center discovered bamboo locusts on forest edges, grass clumps, and rice field banks in Po Ha village, Trung Khanh commune (area of about 1 ha), Ban Vac village, Bac Hung commune (area of about 0.3 ha) with an average density of 5-10 locusts/grass clump, high density of 15-20 locusts/grass clump. The risk of bamboo locusts spreading down to harm rice and corn is very high. Faced with this reality, the unit has advised the district People's Committee to direct the People's Committees of communes and towns to strengthen investigation, detection and prevention of locusts that harm crops.
Not only in the two districts mentioned above, at this time, bamboo locusts have appeared in Loc Binh and Van Quan districts. Currently, relevant units are conducting inspections and determining the area with bamboo locusts to take preventive measures. According to the assessment of professional agencies, the current period is the stage when bamboo locusts form young and begin to feed, causing damage to bamboo, rattan, corn, rice, etc. This is a polyphagous insect, has a long lifespan and damage, is capable of moving quickly in swarms and has great destructive power, if not prevented in time.
Faced with the above situation, specialized sectors, districts and cities that have not yet had bamboo locusts have proactively implemented measures to detect and promptly prevent them effectively.
Mr. Vu Ky Nam, Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: Currently, although bamboo locusts have only appeared in small areas, mainly on bamboo trees, reeds, and grass banks, the unit has directed professional staff to coordinate with the District Agricultural Extension Centers to direct the People's Committees of communes and towns to strengthen investigation, monitoring, and forecasting the possibility of bamboo locusts arising and developing and reviewing high-risk areas to have timely prevention and control plans. Thorough and early treatment will minimize the risk of bamboo locusts spreading, contributing to protecting production.
In 2024, bamboo locusts were detected in 7 districts of Lang Son with an infected area of over 67 hectares. Currently, although bamboo locusts have just emerged with low density and small area, the risk of development and damage is very high. Therefore, in addition to the participation of relevant agencies and units, people need to continue to proactively implement measures to protect crops.
