The crackdown on the Comando Vermelho drug gang in Rio de Janeiro on October 28 was planned months in advance, Al Jazeera reported.
"Police carried out a raid targeting the Comando Vermelho gang, one of Brazil's oldest criminal organizations, in Rio's northern neighborhoods of Penha Complex and Alemao Complex," the source said.

"The raid on October 28 involved 2,500 police and soldiers. Clashes broke out between government forces and gang members," the source said.
Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro, an ally of former President Jair Bolsonaro, said forensic work was still underway. He confirmed the official death toll was 58, including four police officers. However, the Public Defender’s Office, which provides legal assistance to the poor, reported the actual death toll was 132.
After the raid, state authorities seized 118 weapons and more than a ton of drugs. Governor Castro said on October 29 that the operation was a “success.”
"The raid is a historic day in the fight against crime in Rio de Janeiro," said Governor Castro.
However, this campaign also faced opposition from many people. Many people and activists took to the streets to protest and call for the Governor of Rio de Janeiro to resign.
