At the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Mazda continued to introduce the Vision-X Compact concept car - a small urban car with a modern design style and integrated artificial intelligence capable of interacting with the driver as a companion. In terms of appearance, the Vision-X Compact electric car looks like a miniature version of the Mazda2. The car has a closed grille, combined with a fang-shaped LED strip and a glowing Mazda logo.
The exterior design is simple yet sophisticated, with compact headlights, digital rearview mirrors and optimized aerodynamic lines. The car is also equipped with a panoramic glass sunroof and a neatly rounded rear end. With a length of 3,825 mm, a width of 1,795 mm and a height of 1,470 mm, the Vision-X Compact is about 255 mm shorter than the Mazda2 and has a 55 mm shorter wheelbase. This is considered an ideal car for crowded urban environments, emphasizing flexibility and convenience. The interior space continues to pursue the minimalist philosophy. The car is equipped with a flat-bottom steering wheel, a circular digital clock cluster, but there is no central entertainment screen – users will use their personal smartphones to connect and control the car's functions.
The most special feature of the Vision-X Compact lies in the artificial intelligence system developed by Mazda as a “true friend”. AI not only supports basic operations but is also designed to create an emotional relationship with the driver. Mazda hopes the system will make users feel like they're chatting with a friend, with interactions like "Smooth driving!" or "Remember that coffee shop you mentioned last week? There's a cool side road to get there." AI can also recognize moods to choose suitable music, or keep quiet when the driver needs a quiet space. Mazda affirms that this is a long-term development direction, aiming to create a true connection between people and cars in the future.
The production version of the Vision X-Compact – if it previews the next-generation Mazda2 – is expected to use Mazda’s new Skyactiv-Z engine, which is set to utilise ultra-precise management technology to achieve a chemical air-fuel ratio. Called Lambda:1, Mazda's new Skyactiv-Z engine is optimized for clean, complete combustion, allowing it to meet Euro 7 emissions regulations and California's LEV IV standard. The Japanese automaker plans to equip the engine in the new CX-5 by the end of 2027, followed by the next-generation MX-5.
