High-performance sports maintain a position in the top 3 at the SEA Games and in the top 20 at the ASIAD; striving to achieve 5 to 7 gold medals at the ASIAD, medals at the Olympics and Paralympics... are important goals in developing high-performance sports set out in the Strategy for Sports Development to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
As one of the key sports that the sports industry is oriented to invest in, Athletics also has its own calculations to contribute to completing the goals stated in the Strategy.
Glorious moments of Vietnamese Athletics.
A clear roadmap
Over the years, the department and the Vietnam Athletics Federation have evaluated the results of training and coaching based on the year's international competition results and have made future professional forecasts. Based on that reality, Vietnam Athletics has developed a Project for the development of Vietnam Athletics from 2025 to 2035 and a vision to 2045 with a budget estimate to meet the requirements for implementing plans and projects in the roadmap for implementing the Strategy in a consistent manner.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, said: “It takes 8 to 10 years to train an athlete from talent to high performance. Therefore, building a project with two 10-year milestones is reasonable with the characteristics of developing athletics achievements to have a comprehensive plan, a closed and solid roadmap to develop athletics to achieve the highest efficiency”.
To effectively implement the Strategy, Vietnam Athletics has also boldly set specific goals. That is, by 2035, in the next 5 SEA Games, to maintain the top 3 rankings but often stand in the second and first places. From 2035 to 2045, to always be in the first and second places of the SEA Games.
At the 2030 ASIAD, Vietnam Athletics strives for 01 gold medal, 02 to 03 silver medals, and bronze medals. By 2028, 02 athletes will officially qualify to participate in the Olympic Games. Towards the 2034 ASIAD, Vietnam Athletics strives for 02 gold medals, 03 to 04 silver medals, and bronze medals, ranking 9 to 12th overall; Striving to have 03 to 04 athletes qualified to participate in the 2032 Olympic Games.
To achieve the above goals, one of the immediate solutions proposed by Vietnam Athletics is to focus on training and coaching the best people to achieve high performance goals. In particular, the core force is the national team (about 100 athletes/year) and the national youth team (about 120 athletes/year). Along with that is the coaching team to ensure appropriate expertise. To concentrate the force for the national team and the national youth team with the annual coaching team, it is necessary to have the cooperation of provinces, cities and sectors. Investing in focusing the force of athletes and coaches for the 3 levels of the Province (Gifted, Youth and Provincial level) is important because this is the resource for concentrating the national team, youth and gifted teams.
The solutions of Vietnam Athletics also emphasize that the training for the teams needs to be planned more clearly; Focus on building facilities, including running track, athletics training ground at national training centers.
The policy of investing in equipment, science and technology, and applied medicine at national centers to support the selection, training, and practice of athletes is also of interest to Vietnam Athletics, and is included in the system of solutions to effectively implement the set goals...
Actively contribute to the goal of a healthy population
The birth of the Strategy is an opportunity for Vietnamese Athletics in general and Athletics in particular to have the best development and achieve high results. Not stopping at the field of high achievements, Vietnamese Athletics also strives to contribute to the implementation of 6% to 7% of the population practicing regularly, contributing to the completion of the target of over 45% of the population practicing sports regularly, 90% of students, students, and armed forces meeting the physical training standards as the target set in the Strategy.
To realize this goal, Vietnam Athletics highly appreciates the coordinating role of the Ministry of Education and Training in mobilizing students to practice extracurricular activities, outside of regular physical education classes in schools.
The fact that the education sector of provinces, cities, and universities organize athletics competitions for students not only contributes positively to the goal of regular training but also attracts the attention of sponsors.
Besides, the indispensable role of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Culture and Sports in coordinating with agencies and units in organizing Athletics competitions to stimulate the development of the movement.
To achieve the goals in the strategy, first of all, there must be coordination between the Central and local levels, agreement on the direction of sports investment, key Olympic sports, as well as a close combination between physical facilities, coaches, regimes and policies for athletes, from which human resources can be attracted....
