Mobile Cinema Today: Changes Needed

Although not as popular as before, mobile film screening activities are still maintained to contribute to the dissemination of the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and knowledge related to people's lives. However, in order for this activity to be effective, there should be more positive changes.

We followed Film Screening Team No. 2 (belonging to the Propaganda and Mobile Film Screening Team, the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center) to serve the people in Ba Dui village (Khanh Binh commune, Khanh Vinh district) at a time when the movie "Peach, Pho and Piano" ordered by the Department of Cinema to be produced by Feature Film Joint Stock Company 1 was being sought after by a large audience. However, the movie shown to the people that day was "Legend Writers" which was released more than 10 years ago. "This movie is also good and meaningful, but I still want to watch the movie "Peach, Pho and Piano" like my friends in the city, to know why the online community is so interested in it", shared Cao Thi Lia (Ba Dui village). Cao Van Thang (Ba Dui village) said that the demand for watching movies of the people in the mountains is very large. Through the mass media, many people also know which movies are newly produced and which movies are attracting audiences. Therefore, mountain audiences also want to watch movies that many people are interested in.

"From the audience's perspective, everyone wants to watch new films that receive a lot of attention. However, the current mobile film screening activities mainly perform the assigned tasks, to maintain the propaganda of the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws. Previously, every film screening was very crowded. Since the development of audio-visual media, especially the widespread spread of social networks, the audience going to mobile film screenings is sometimes crowded, sometimes empty. In my opinion, the Department of Cinema should provide good, attractive films that are close to real life to attract and appeal to people more," said Mr. Nguyen Van Dong - propagandist of the Mobile Film and Propaganda Team.

According to the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center, in 2023, the unit conducted 1,056 mobile film screenings, attracting 179,520 viewers. Although the source of films for screening is abundant, it has not met the enjoyment needs of the regions, especially documentaries and reports. As for the source of newly produced feature films, the unit has difficulty accessing them because of high market prices. Therefore, at many screening locations, the number of viewers is very modest. Mr. Nguyen Van Viet - Deputy Director in charge of the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center said: "Screening films to serve the people is the task and also the joy of each member of the mobile film screening teams. Through that, each person wishes to bring films full of cultural, historical, revolutionary tradition, emotion, and entertainment to every remote village. Despite many difficulties, the members of the mobile film screening team constantly strive to overcome them to serve the people".

Currently, the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center has 4 mobile film screening teams with 16 staff to perform tasks in remote areas of the districts: Khanh Son, Khanh Vinh, Dien Khanh, Cam Lam, Van Ninh, Ninh Hoa town and Cam Ranh city. Due to the current favorable conditions for receiving information and entertainment of the people with many options, they are no longer interested in film screenings. On the other hand, the film screening equipment of the teams is too old, has not been newly equipped for a long time, so the sound and image quality is not good. The source of films for the people is still heavy on propaganda content, while the source of entertainment films is limited, so it has not met the needs of the people. It is thought that the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center should make recommendations to the Department of Cinema in providing film sources for screening to serve the people in mountainous and remote areas in accordance with the needs of the audience. Only then will the people in the mountainous areas really enjoy going to the movies and the movie screening activities will really contribute to raising people's awareness.
