On August 29, Mr. Thach Canh Tam, the security team leader at Minh Thanh apartment building (on Le Van Luong street, Tan Hung ward, Ho Chi Minh City) voluntarily handed over a peacock to the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department to care for and raise according to regulations.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Tam said that on the morning of August 28, while on duty at the apartment building, he received information from residents about the appearance of a large peacock on the balcony of an apartment on the 6th floor.
Mr. Tam quickly went up to catch and bring the bird down. Seeing no one claiming the bird as a lost pet, he contacted the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department to hand it over.
According to Mr. Tam, the apartment on the 6th floor is estimated to be about 20 meters above the ground. Both he and the residents here do not know where this peacock flew from and appeared on the balcony.
"This is a rare animal, so the best way is to hand it over to the authorities so that the animal can be properly cared for, or release it back into the wild," Mr. Tam shared.
Receiving the bird to care for and raise according to regulations, forest rangers from the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department initially identified it as an Indian peacock, scientific name Pavo cristatus , listed in Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The ranger recorded that this was a male bird, weighing about 4.3 kg.
