Traditional Market: Challenges in the Face of E-Commerce Development

The strong development of e-commerce has posed many challenges to the operation of traditional markets. People go to the market almost only to buy food, while for items such as clothes and cosmetics, buying and selling has become quite quiet.

Although it is a large-scale market, the sale of ready-made clothing at Long Hoa market, Hoa Thanh town, is also in a state of disrepair.

Nowadays, shopping on e-commerce platforms and social networking sites is favored by consumers because of its convenience; all you need is a smartphone, a few simple steps to place an order and have it delivered to your door. Organizations and individuals doing business on social networking platforms also allow customers to check the goods before receiving them, reducing the fear of being scammed like before. In addition to the convenience mentioned above, shopping on social networking platforms also attracts buyers because they always come with promotional programs.

A clothing trader at Thanh Duc market, Go Dau district, said that this trader can only trade on the weekends, with very few customers. Trading at traditional markets is not as good as before, business is sluggish but they have to pay rent, taxes, etc., so many stalls in the market have closed, only a few households are still doing business but they do not know how long they will last.

The situation is not much better for large-scale traditional markets. At Trang Bang market (Trang Bang town), most of the stalls in the greenhouses have closed, with less than half of the stalls remaining open.

A clothing retailer confided that doing business on social media and e-commerce platforms has many advantages over doing business in traditional markets, such as not having to pay rent, not having to pay taxes, and not having to invest much capital. Since the rise of online sales, especially of clothing, cosmetics, consumer goods, etc., traditional market businesses have been in decline.

Traders hope that tax policies for online businesses will be strictly implemented, creating healthy competition between traders in traditional markets and online businesses.
