How to choose the right 10th grade admission wish?

There is no formula for choosing grade 10 preferences that is common for all students, however, there are still basic, important notes to ensure passing grade 10 public schools.

On the afternoon of May 6, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper in collaboration with the Departmentof Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City organized a talk show "Registering and adjusting 10th grade wishes in Ho Chi Minh City". More than 200 questions from parents and students sent to the program all revolved around the content of setting 10th grade exam wishes correctly and accurately.

The right strategy

At the program, 10th grade admissions consultants said that choosing a 10th grade entrance exam is an important step for students to get into the high school they want. To do so, it is necessary to have a smart and appropriate strategy for setting aspirations.

Mr. Do Tri Nhan, Department of Examination and Quality Control - Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, shared that the 10th grade entrance exam begins with registering wishes. According to Mr. Nhan, the first criteria for choosing a 10th grade wish is to choose a school near home, suitable for one's own ability, suitable for learning needs, with content that one can enjoy such as clubs, facilities... In terms of personal ability criteria, students can refer to teachers who teach directly, from parents. Regarding choosing a school according to wishes, the ability should be arranged in accordance with the reference standard score of the previous year. Wish 2 has a learning ability 1-1.5 points higher than the standard score, wish 3 has a standard score about 2 points lower than the ability.

Many questions were sent to the program, wondering if there is a standard formula for setting 10th grade exam preferences? Ms. Tran Thi Hong Thuy, Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (District 1), said that in reality, choosing 10th grade preferences has not been easy, there is no absolute formula. According to Ms. Thuy, choosing preferences can be compared to the old saying "know yourself, know your enemy, and you will win a hundred battles". Knowing yourself and your enemy here means understanding your own abilities, interests, and strengths. Besides, have you analyzed the data carefully for the schools you plan to apply to? "We can rely on many factors to determine our own abilities, such as the second semester test scores, practice tests, and benchmark data of high schools... Find out the benchmark scores of the past 3 years of the school you want to enter to see how they have fluctuated to serve as a basis for setting appropriate preferences" - Ms. Thuy advised.

Ms. Doan Thi Thu Hoai, Principal of Nguyen Thai Binh High School (Tan Binh District), said that to be admitted to the high school of their choice, students need to prepare their knowledge and consult with teachers and parents. "The first choice is the school that they like and is suitable for their abilities. The second and third choices need to pay attention to their learning ability, geographical conditions, and travel. Avoid traffic jams, which can affect their health," Ms. Hoai advised.

Regarding the question "If I get 20 points in the 10th grade exam, which school in Tan Binh and Tan Phu districts can I get into?", according to Ms. Hoai, in the past 3 years, the benchmark scores of high schools in Tan Binh and Tan Phu districts have ranged from 17 to 25 points. Schools with benchmark scores of 20 points or more include Nguyen Thuong Hien and Tay Thanh High Schools.

As for Nguyen Thai Binh High School in the past 3 years, the standard score has fluctuated from 17 to 17.75 points. "With a score of 20 points, the opportunity to get into schools in the above 2 areas is quite high. So you can consider other factors such as your favorite school and geographical distance" - Ms. Hoai informed.

Interested in subject groups, clubs...

Not only asking questions about their wishes, many parents and students sent to the program a request for a clear explanation of the elective subjects in the high school program before making their exam wishes. A student asked, how can a school organize subjects so that students "study whatever they like"? According to Ms. Tran Thi Hong Thuy, regarding the elective subjects that students are still wondering about, the difference between the 2018 general education program and the 2006 program is that students can choose their elective subjects. Not all high schools organize all the elective subjects, so students need to pay attention when choosing a school. At Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School, in addition to the general compulsory subjects, informatics, physics, chemistry, and biology are also compulsory subjects. When choosing elective subjects in high school, students need to orient themselves for the high school graduation exam 3 years later. Therefore, students need to determine early the elective subjects that are suitable for their abilities.

"Don't worry too much about movements and clubs, because nowadays most schools have built clubs, movements and activities. Nguyen Thai Binh High School alone has more than 15 clubs, as well as activities outside of school, outside the classroom..." - Ms. Hoai added.

Mr. Tran Anh Minh, Deputy General Director of Quang Ich Technology Group Joint Stock Company, said that in the Admissions Portal 10 at the address: ts10.hcm.edu.vn, there is information about the subject combinations that schools organize to teach, along with other information such as shuttle buses if choosing a far away school... for students to refer to and make the right choice. According to him, this information portal was built by the unit in coordination with the Department of Education and Training, with full information of high schools so that students have information to register their wishes to enter high schools. In the future, the system will use artificial intelligence to personalize students' choices.

Is the benchmark down?

Many questions were asked directly to the advisory board members, wondering whether it is appropriate to deduct grade 9 points as a basis for registering wishes and how many points should be deducted? According to Mr. Do Tri Nhan, students should consult their teachers to determine their abilities because each secondary school and each region is different, so it is not possible to give a reasonable deduction level as a basis for registering wishes.

A parent asked: If a child studies the integrated program according to Project 5695, can he/she choose to specialize at a specialized school and integrate at another school? According to Mr. Do Tri Nhan, if he/she has registered for the specialized exam, he/she does not need to register for integration because the specialized exam and the integrated exam are taken in one session. However, for those who have studied integrated at junior high school, this score will be considered for 3 integration wishes at non-specialized schools.

The program was livestreamed on the publishing platforms of the Lao Dong Newspaper, attracting a large number of viewers and hundreds of questions sent to the advisory board. Photo: TAN THANH

Many parents and students asked, this year, there are few students taking the exam because of the Tiger year, will the benchmark score decrease? Ms. Doan Thi Thu Hoai replied: It is currently impossible to predict the benchmark score because the candidates have not taken the exam yet. The most important thing is that candidates should study hard to get the best exam results!

Regarding the question of whether it is possible to choose a school far from home, Mr. Do Tri Nhan said that the admission software has a warning button when studying far from home. However, if candidates feel that studying far from home is still safe, they can still do it. When admitted, candidates are not allowed to change their preferences or transfer schools after being admitted. Ms. Tran Thi Hong Thuy said that recently, people have had more convenient transportation when they want to study far from home. For example, students in Thu Duc City want to study in District 1, which used to be far away, but now it is quite convenient when using the metro. "Therefore, the geographical distance is far, but with the convenience of current means of transportation, distance is no longer a problem," Ms. Thuy emphasized.

There are 5 days to adjust your wishes.

Although the registration period for the 10th grade entrance exam is from May 2, according to the 10th grade consulting experts at the program, not many students have registered yet. Meanwhile, many questions are raised about whether to adjust the application after the HCM City Department of Education and Training initially counted the number of candidates registering for the first application? At the same time, if there is an adjustment, what is the basis for the adjustment? According to Mr. Do Tri Nhan, after the deadline for registration of application, students will have 5 days to decide whether to keep it or adjust it. The basis for adjustment is given as an example, if students register for school A, according to statistics, there are 1,400 students registered but the quota is only 720. So students should consider, should they try to keep the first application they have registered or not? If you feel that you have tried hard and do not want to be pressured anymore, choose another school with fewer registrations.

Sincerely thank the cooperation of the units:
