New "blockade" for 2025 enrollment: Requirement for entrance scores of major subjects

The Ministry of Education and Training has just issued a document guiding university and college admissions in 2025. Notably, the Ministry has issued regulations to "tighten" the entrance threshold for foundational subjects.

The Ministry requires universities and colleges to have regulations to ensure that admitted candidates are equipped with basic knowledge of key subjects related to their training industry.

Specifically, according to the new guidelines, when developing admission methods (combinations, independent tests), schools must ensure that the subject combinations or independent assessment tests used for admission are developed scientifically and practically, and ensure the selection of candidates with basic knowledge and core competencies appropriate to the training program.

In which, the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that a number of specific requirements must be met.

In case a university or college training program requires basic knowledge in a certain subject, the training institution must specify the entry threshold for that subject to ensure that candidates have studied that subject in high school.

To clarify, the Ministry of Education and Training gives a typical example: Medical training programs that require basic knowledge of biology need to stipulate conditions for high school biology scores or high school graduation exams.

The training institution must specify the minimum percentage of the core content (related to the field of study) that the candidate must achieve in the total score of the exam. For example, when considering admission to the mathematics major using an independent assessment test, the training institution must clearly specify the percentage of the math section score in the exam.

However, the Ministry also provides some exceptions, the above requirements may not apply to language training courses where learners start from a basic level (for example, learning French from scratch). Similarly, courses such as technology pedagogy or information technology pedagogy may also have appropriate adjustments.

The Ministry of Education and Training also noted that during the admission process, universities must not set out any requirements that cause inconvenience to candidates, contrary to the Government 's regulations on abolishing the requirement to submit or present household registration books and certificates of residence information when carrying out administrative procedures.
