Proactive measures to prevent cold for livestock

Việt NamViệt Nam14/02/2025

(QBĐT) - Affected by cold air, recently, in Quang Binh, the temperature has dropped sharply, causing severe cold, affecting the health of livestock. In this situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and localities have instructed people to proactively implement cold-proof measures to ensure the safety of livestock.

In recent days, due to the influence of the cold air, the temperature in the province has dropped. Especially in mountainous areas, the temperature is often lower than in the plains, affecting the resistance of livestock and potentially causing disease outbreaks.

Tuyen Hoa district has over 15,000 buffaloes and cows; 27,985 pigs and 4,086 goats. To proactively prevent and protect livestock from the cold, from the beginning of winter, the district has directed the specialized department to coordinate with communes to regularly inform people about the weather situation through the commune and village loudspeaker system; and encourage people not to let their livestock roam freely during cold days.

In addition, the district has also instructed livestock farmers to proactively source food, ensure food supply in the barn to prevent livestock from going hungry or thirsty; expand the area of grass planting. The district recommends that people do not graze or let buffaloes and cows work when there is severe cold, when the temperature drops below 12oC...; apply the regime of late grazing and early return; keep the barn floor dry, cover it to avoid drafts, make coats to keep it closed, keep it warm, create a heat source to warm the livestock; clean, disinfect, and sterilize barns, properly handle dead livestock and animal waste...

Mr. Tran Xuan Phuong's family in Tan Son village, Son Hoa commune (Tuyen Hoa) has 7 cows grazing on the hill. With the guidance of local officials, every year he actively plants more grass, stores dry straw, and dry peanuts to prevent hunger and cold for the cows in winter. When there is a warning of severe cold, he brings the cows back to the barn, uses dry straw and fresh grass to feed, and at the same time, covers the surrounding area and spreads straw on the ground to keep the cows warm.

Mr. Phuong said that thanks to careful preparation, the food source for the cows is always abundant, and the family also proactively bought tarpaulin to cover the barn, protecting the animals from the wind. On cold days, the family also burns firewood and rice husks in the barn area to increase the temperature where the animals live. Therefore, through the recent cold spells, my cows are still safe and healthy.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuyen Hoa district, Pham Anh Minh, said: The unit has sent cadres to the grassroots to propagate and instruct livestock farmers on measures to protect livestock from the wind and keep them warm during the severe cold spells that occurred this winter. In addition to feeding poultry with enough meals, in sufficient quantity and quality, the district has also instructed people to provide enough warm water, supplement vitamins and minerals to increase the resistance of poultry. The district also instructed people to do a good job of cleaning barns and livestock areas, disinfecting barns and the surrounding environment periodically with common chemicals, and vaccinating all types of vaccines according to regulations to protect livestock.

With the synchronous implementation of solutions, Quang Binh is protecting livestock well. The number of livestock and poultry in the province is increasing, improving economic efficiency in livestock farming, bringing stable income to people.

In Minh Hoa district, one of the localities that often has low temperatures and dense fog, it has a significant impact on livestock. Currently, the total herd of pigs is over 13,300; the herd of buffaloes and cows is nearly 20,000; the herd of goats is over 2,000 and over 143,000 poultry. In order to do a good job of preventing and controlling diseases for livestock, the district has issued a document directing the professional department and related units to directly guide, inspect and urge the work of preventing and controlling cold and diseases for livestock and poultry. Especially in the highland areas and ethnic minority areas, where people still have the habit of grazing livestock, the district has also assigned staff to guide people to cover all barns and bring free-range buffaloes and cows back to the barn when the weather is low to protect the livestock.

In recent days, due to the influence of the cold air, the temperature in our province has decreased sharply. To continue to prevent and combat prolonged cold weather, the Provincial People's Committee has sent a document to departments, branches, sectors and localities on proactively responding to prolonged cold weather. In particular, the Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to proactively direct and urge localities to synchronously deploy measures to prevent cold weather, epidemics, protect agricultural production, especially livestock, poultry, aquatic products, newly planted winter-spring rice, and limit damage to agricultural production.

Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Tran Cong Tam, said: Currently, the province has nearly 93,000 buffaloes and cows; 272,000 pigs and more than 6 million poultry. To prevent hunger and cold for livestock, since the beginning of winter, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has also issued a document requesting the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns to resolutely direct the prevention of hunger and cold and disease prevention for livestock, especially buffaloes and cows. In addition, the Department of Animal Husbandry has also issued a document guiding the prevention of hunger and cold for livestock on how to reinforce barns in winter; working and grazing regimes for livestock; care and feeding methods; disease prevention for livestock, etc.
