Chinese President Xi Jinping meets 'American friend' Bill Gates

On June 16, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Bill Gates, the American billionaire co-founder of Microsoft Corporation.

The People's Daily quoted President Xi Jinping at the meeting as saying that Bill Gates was the "first American friend" he met in Beijing this year.

Mr. Xi Jinping also emphasized that China "always places hope in the American people and hopes to maintain friendship between the two peoples."

According to Chinese media, at the meeting, Bill Gates "expressed his thoughts on the current situation and future cooperation with China".

A number of foreign business leaders have been visiting China since the country ended strict measures imposed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly three years.

The meeting with Bill Gates was President Xi Jinping's first meeting with a foreign businessman in recent years.
