For Dr. Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, his recent trip to Vietnam left a deep impression of the country's efforts in green transformation. The technology and industrial policy expert at Indonesia's Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was particularly impressed by Vingroup 's pioneering spirit and believes that the Vietnamese private corporation is a symbol of regional transformation.
Pillars for “green civilization”
“I am really impressed with Vingroup’s vision and mission,” said Dr. Yannes, a senior researcher at the Indonesian National Center for Sustainable Transport Technology.

According to him, in just a short period of time, Vingroup has done what many people only dare to dream of: Building a vibrant ecosystem, a crystallization of innovation, aspiration and sustainable development. “All of this proves that, with vision and strong will, a business can completely shape the future at a speed faster than any imaginable limit,” he said.
In Mr. Yannes's view, Vingroup is not only a multi-industry economic group, but also a symbol of "regional transformation".
As an experienced researcher on green transportation, Dr. Yannes believes that the biggest difference between VinFast and other car manufacturers is that the Vietnamese car manufacturer does not stop at producing electric cars. He commented that VinFast is the “heartbeat” in Vingroup’s comprehensive green transformation journey, spanning from clean energy, green infrastructure to electrified transportation. “I believe this is not just an industrial strategy but also a roadmap towards a green civilization,” he said.
More broadly, according to him, from battery production, pure electric vehicles, renewable energy development, to university education, high-tech research... Vingroup is creating a "cross-industry" ecosystem, connecting science, people and the market.
According to him, Vingroup's comprehensive vision is not only to create industries, but also to build a future where technology, energy and people develop together. “I believe that in the near future, Vingroup will become one of the most important pillars of the Southeast Asian region in the field of energy and green industry,” he said.
“Southeast Asia, why not?”
For decades, the Indonesian and Southeast Asian car markets have been dominated by major brands from Japan and South Korea. But according to Dr. Yannes, VinFast is ushering in a new era, raising questions about regional identity: “Southeast Asia, why not?”.
The emergence of VinFast – the first ASEAN brand to reach out globally in the electric vehicle industry – has a strong symbolic meaning: A “new Asia” with enough technological, financial and human resources to compete on equal terms.
“VinFast can rise to become the 'flagship' of ASEAN - representing unlimited creativity, confidence and strategic vision, leading humanity into the green industrial era,” Mr. Yannes affirmed.

In Indonesia, VinFast is becoming more and more widely known, especially through its “green taxis” using VinFast electric vehicles. This demonstrates the company’s vision of making electric vehicles more accessible to everyone.
Not only impressed by the scale, Dr. Yannes sees strategic synergies between Vingroup and Indonesia. “The Indonesian government is promoting the electric vehicle industry, clean energy and 4.0 human resource training. Vingroup is completely in line with this orientation,” he said.
If Japan has Toyota, Korea has Hyundai, then Southeast Asia has VinFast
For Dr. Yannes, Vingroup's story is more than just the success of a Vietnamese corporation. “If Japan has Toyota, Korea has Hyundai, then Southeast Asia can absolutely have VinFast,” he affirmed.
“It is an affirmation that the region is not just a consumer of value, but also a creator, innovator and shaper of value, proving that the future of green industry can absolutely be written from this side of the world,” the expert added.
More broadly, according to Mr. Yannes, Southeast Asia is not just looking for an automaker, but an ecosystem that can connect energy, technology and people. He believes that Vingroup brings together a closed ecosystem, a comprehensive green vision and a desire for globalization, affirming that this integrated model will help ASEAN become the locomotive of the green industrial era globally.
More specifically, in Indonesia, he particularly appreciated Vingroup's strategy of developing solar energy, storage batteries and electrified transportation. “The ‘green island’ model – where renewable energy is combined with electric vehicles – fits perfectly with Indonesia’s sustainable development strategy.”
Vingroup has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesian state-owned enterprise - PT. Sulsel Andalan Energi - in South Sulawesi (Indonesia) on cooperation in the field of renewable energy, with a focus on large-scale solar power projects. According to the MoU, the two sides also agreed to jointly research, develop, and effectively exploit other business opportunities in the field of sustainable environment.
Vingroup and PT. Sulsel Andalan Energi are also actively involved in comprehensive research, surveying suitable locations for onshore or underwater solar power projects, integrating energy storage solutions and planning grid connection.
“After the first life cycle, electric vehicle batteries can be reused as solar energy storage devices,” said Mr. Yannes. “This will be a new billion-dollar industry, and I believe Vingroup has the vision, technology and capacity to lead.”
